KIPP currently educates more than 100,000 students in 255 schools across the country, including Indianapolis. KIPP Indy Public Schools (KIPP Indy) was founded in 2004 with one class of fifth grade students and has grown to educate more than 1,250 students across three schools. KIPP Indy Unite Elementary was founded in 2014 with 100 kindergarten students and has grown a grade level each year to educate more than 600 students in grades K-5 in the 2020-21 school year. Of the students that attend KIPP Indy, 93% qualify for free and reduced lunch, 93% are African American, and 20% receive special education services. We will continue to grow KIPP Indy’s network of schools to educate a total of 1,400 students in grades K-12.

Job Description

KIPP Indy Public Schools is seeking a Director of ELL. Reporting to the Managing Director of Academic Strategy the Director of ELL will coordinate all special education and ELL services for KIPP Indy Public Schools. The overarching goals for this position are to improve student achievement for all learners, to disseminate best practices for working with students with special needs and English Language Learners, to lead staff professional development to ensure the school-based provision of tier I-III supports, and to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines. An ideal candidate will be knowledgeable of and respectful of the culture of the community served, support and advocate for students and families, and collaborates effectively with a variety of stakeholders in supporting students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Student Supports Compliance and Monitoring
    • Set clear vision and direction for special education and ELL services across all KIPP Indy schools.
    • Foster collaboration with school-based SPED teachers, leaders, and school-based ELL points of contact.
    • Meet regularly with Directors of Special Education to ensure alignment on requirements for compliance.
    • Perform comprehensive annual special education and ELL audit for KIPP Indy Public Schools
    • Represent KIPP Indy for external Special Education and ELL department purposes and serve as the point person for stakeholder requests
    • Create systems for monitoring and reporting compliance with the timeliness associated with every special education and ELL requests (IEP, ILP, RTI, testing, and evaluation)  

 

  • Develop and support teachers and leaders on classroom instruction for English Language Learners and students who receive Special Education services
    • Provide direct support for ELL teachers of records with English Language Learners in all grade levels.
    • Utilize data to inform instruction, group students, and target skills and strategies for instruction.
    • Facilitate administration of English Language assessments and use the results to inform curriculum development and classroom instruction.
    • Support ELL teachers of record and Directors of Special Education to create a communication system to inform teachers of the work students are doing during targeted interventions.
    • Serve as campus testing coordinator for WIDA testing and assist the testing coordinators with accommodations and information about ELL students.
    • Develop teachers to identify the best ways to differentiate and accommodate ELL and SPED students.
    • Develop teachers and leaders to identify resources to improve instruction for ELL and SPED students.
    • Design a comprehensive “services” schedule that reflects all students needing services, as well as the frequency of services and accommodations
    • Ensure compliance with all regulatory ELL and SPED mandates including identification of students, assessments, record-keeping, dismissals, refusals of service, etc.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    • Consulting with the school-based leadership team to develop comprehensive supports and interventions
    • Communicating with students, families, and staff and respond to family concerns promptly and effectively
    • Participating in team meetings, racial equity professional development, and other school-wide events
    • Displaying the highest ethical and professional behavior and confidentiality when working with all stakeholders

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two to five years working with English Language Learners
  • Experience in working within a school environment or extensive work with children, teenagers, and young adults
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic, extensive knowledge of child and adolescent development, and a documented track record of personal and professional success
  • Strong record of helping students from underserved neighborhoods achieve academic success
  • Experience in analyzing student data and using data to inform instruction
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to the KIPP Indy mission and community
  • Possess a strong knowledge of content area and have met all required educator standards for their content area
  • Pass a criminal background check, as required by law

COMPENSATION
Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience, and includes benefits. Teachers are also eligible for performance-based bonuses.
