In the 2021-22 school year, the KIPP Jacksonville region will be comprised of four schools educating 2,000 students, kindergarten through ninth grade, in the North and Westsides of Jacksonville, Florida:

  • KIPP VOICE Academy: Kindergarten – 6th grade
  • KIPP Bessie Coleman Academy: Kindergarten – 7th grade
  • New KIPP High School (coming 2021-22): 9th grade

Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Chief External Affairs Officer (CEAO) will join KIPP Jacksonville during an exciting phase of growth and organizational development. This is a senior leadership role on the regional team that will oversee marketing and communications, fundraising and partnership initiatives, ensuring that we create and maintain relationships with stakeholders, communicate effectively with internal and external partners, garner resources in pursuit of our mission, and steward our brand in a way that honors and celebrates the experiences of our students, families, staff and communities.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a deep passion for social justice and educational equity for all children, extensive executive leadership and relationship-building skills. They will also possess strengths in the following areas: Leading strategic communications; inspiring and influencing individuals and groups; contributing to a high-performing, equitable and inclusive culture; developing an integrated marketing, communications and fundraising vision; and managing others to outcomes. The individual will have a history of collaborating with diverse groups to develop impactful partnerships and achieve ambitious results. Additionally, successful candidates will use their transferable skills to raise a $1.2 million operating and growth budget. They will be energized by building relationships and enlisting supporters to the mission of KIPP Jacksonville.

This position is year-round and performs duties as assigned by their manager. Typical hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but can vary based on role and season.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
The Chief External Affairs Officer (CEAO) will be responsible for the following scope of work:

Fundraising - 50%: Develop, implement and hold others accountable to the strategic organizational initiatives to meet revenue goals, cultivate new prospects, and increase overall funding; continuously monitor and refine these initiatives, as needed

  • In partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, annually fundraise $1.2 million to support KIPP Jacksonville’s daily operations and growth plans
  • Partner with the Executive Director, Chief Schools Officer and Chief Operating Officer to determine revenue goals that align to annual budgetary needs
  • Facilitate the success of an ambitious multi-year growth campaign by adding two to three new major donors with the capacity to give five-figure or more gifts to KIPP Jacksonville by 2023; create an individualized cultivation plan for each prospect; and plan and execute three annual appeal campaigns
  • Oversee a fund development operation that drives donor cultivation, solicitations, and stewardship for a breadth of individual, institutional and corporate donors
  • Participate in solicitations and manage a portfolio of major donors/funders through meetings, events and networking opportunities

Marketing & Communications - 25%: Create and implement KIPP Jacksonville’s strategic marketing and communications plan that furthers our mission and elevates the stories of students, parents, staff and other key stakeholders.

  • Ensure successful implementation of long-term approach for strategic communications, messaging and marketing materials differentiated by audience (e.g., families, teachers, donors, alumni)
  • Implement an internal communications strategy that promotes a unified brand and messaging
  • Oversee brand positioning, crisis communications and public relations
  • Ensure KIPP is represented accurately and with integrity across diverse audiences

Regional Leadership - 15%: Serve as a member of KIPP Jacksonville’s regional leadership team to collectively provide strategic direction oversight of a ~$25M organization with a deep commitment to racial justice and equity

  • Work with leaders to ensure alignment across functions and drive cross-functional initiatives
  • Serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for KIPP Jacksonville, and articulate our mission to external constituents, partner organizations, and potential funders
  • Participate in Board meetings and on relevant Board committees to provide updates and solicit input on operations goals
  • Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer to develop and produce regular analytic reports for the senior leadership team and Board that synthesizes the financial progress and trends of fundraising activities
  • Bring a proven track record, both as a manager and peer, of navigating complex issues, managing multiple stakeholders, making decisions, and driving strong results

Partnerships - 10%: Ensure the success of our long-term partnerships strategy to benefit our students, schools, and alumni

  • Oversee corporate engagement strategy and partnerships with youth-serving organizations to support career readiness initiatives, after-school programming, enrichment opportunities, and strong community ties
  • Identify and anticipate internal organizational needs and mobilize third-party partners to even more effectively support our students

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS

  • 10+ years of senior-level development, external affairs, marketing, and/or communications leadership with track record of success and progressive responsibilities
  • Leadership experience in public relations strategy development and implementation
  • Exposure to fundraising and transferable experience with any of the following aspects of development, including institutional giving, planned giving, annual giving and event management; strong knowledge of how marketing, communications and public relations can further fundraising efforts and success using these tools to improve and optimize development outcomes
  • Strong financial competence in budgeting and revenue goal setting
  • Experience working in and sharing affirming stories of Black, Latinx, and/or low-income communities

HIGHLY PREFERRED

  • Familiarity with the Jacksonville philanthropic community
  • Prior experience in education
  • Experience in board management
