KIPP Columbus, a growing network of free, open enrollment public schools in Columbus, Ohio, is seeking a committed, dynamic, and innovative leader to serve as an Assistant School Leader at our Primary School (Grades K-1) for the 2020-21 school year.

KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national network of free, open enrollment, college preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and life. There are 255 KIPP schools across the nation and the District of Columbia, serving more than 100,000 students. Nationally, KIPP students are graduating at 3x the national average for low-income students.

Founded in 2008 with 50 students in 5th grade, KIPP Columbus currently serves nearly 2,000 students in grades Kindergarten through twelfth. During the 2018-2019 school year, and for the third year in a row, KIPP Columbus had the highest amount of academic growth of any community school in Ohio.

The Opportunity 

The Assistant School Leader will serve as a key member of the KIPP Columbus Primary School leadership team and will be responsible for facilitating a culture of constant learning and collaboration with students, instructional staff, families, and community members. The Assistant School Leader will serve as a model teacher and coach and lead individuals and teams to perform at high levels. This position requires an organized and consistent educator with a concrete vision of excellence, adult leadership experience, the ability to build outstanding relationships with students, teachers, and families, and a talent for building a school culture. The Assistant School Leader will report to the School Leader. 

Job Description

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Supporting teachers in planning and delivering high-quality instruction. 

  • Serving as a model teacher and communicator, modeling and sharing best practices pertaining to instruction, classroom management, and child/family engagement.

  • Observing and coaching teachers.

  • Identifying and developing professional development opportunities for staff members to continuously improve their craft.

  • Supporting the day-to-day operations of the school, including monitoring of, collection of, analysis of, and putting to use of all school data.

  • Fostering positive school culture. 

    • Planning and leading school-wide events, celebrations, and gatherings

    • Managing student behavior systems.

    • Embracing diversity, anti-racism, equity, and inclusion work. 

    • Leading teachers and students so that in all ways, we leave places, people and ideas better than we found them.

  • Engaging in professional development alongside other KIPP Columbus Leaders and Stakeholders, using comprehensive progression plans and using feedback and suggestions to practice and apply in real time.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a 4 year accredited college or university required.

  • Minimum of three years of successful, full-time, lead teaching experience in low-income communities

  • Prior experience in a teacher leadership or other leadership role, such as Dean of Students/Culture or Assistant Principal highly preferred.

  • Strong track record of results and leadership in a school setting

  • Experience in analyzing student data and using data to inform instruction

  • Belief that outstanding school leaders, staff, and teachers can achieve excellent outcomes for all students.

  • Ability to persevere with a sense of optimism, strong problem solving skills, and desire to learn and grow in a collaborative professional learning community.

  • Willingness, and commitment, to go above and beyond to prove the possible with students.

  • Ability to multi-task and work within an ambiguous, fast-moving, start-up environment, while driving toward clarity and solutions.
