  • KIPP Bessie Coleman Academy: Kindergarten – 7th grade
  • KIPP Bold City High School (new, coming 2021-22): 9th grade

For the 2021-22 school year, KIPP VOICE Academy will be located at 813 Golfair Blvd (32209). Our other three schools will operate at our main campus at 1440 McDuff Avenue N (32254).

Job Description

This position will be based in our regional offices in Jacksonville, FL. The position may, at times, be virtual but the expectation is that the position would primarily be face-to-face.


POSITION OVERVIEW
The Senior Director of Data is responsible for establishing the organization-wide vision and structure for the collection, warehousing, and analyses of academic and operations data for KIPP Public Schools Jacksonville. They are the primary liaison between the requirements and goals of the Academic and Operations Team as it relates to using and maintaining data for the region. The Senior Director of Data will ensure data systems are established and optimized and manage projects that span across different teams in the region. This role will also involve setting an ambitious, yet feasible, plan for ensuring that the organization’s data infrastructure supports the tools needed to effectively monitor student, school, and organizational progress towards key goals and priorities identified by the instructional leadership and data teams.

The Senior Director of Data  will also be responsible for writing SQL queries upon request, and at times supporting the data team around batch and real-time integrations with other information systems, including systems outside of KIPP Public Schools Jacksonville. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of the technical and functional aspects of database design and operations, as well as a strong understanding of SQL and other programming languages.

The ideal candidate will understand K-12 or higher education, have a proven track record of building organizational capacity to integrate data into decision-making, and the capacity to analyze existing systems to engage staff in process improvements. This role manages the Manager of Data and Instructional Technology, and will add roles to the data team in the coming school years. The Senior Director of Data also serves on the region’s Senior Leadership Team and is managed by the Senior Director of Operations. This position is part of the Shared Services team and is a year-round employee. Typical hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The SDD is a full-time role on the Shared Services team which oversees four schools currently and is actively planning for growth in future school years. As a member of the Shared Services team, this individual would be responsible for doing whatever it takes to ensure that students develop the knowledge, skills, and character strengths they need to succeed throughout their education and in the competitive world beyond.

This position is year-round and performs duties as assigned by their manager. Typical hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but vary for this role based on the season. 

KEY DUTIES

Data Optimization

  • Maintains and optimizes student data systems, and integrates multiple data systems to allow staff to answer key business questions

  •  Oversees the development and management of the KIPP Jacksonville data and research agenda

  •  Identifies appropriate department level owners of various data functions and coordinates the necessary training and support on these functions.

Maximizing Technology for Learning

  • Collaborates with the Senior Director of Curriculum and Instruction and school leaders to develop and implement educational technology strategy and appropriate professional development to maximize the teaching and learning potential of the data and technology investments

General Department Leadership

  • Manages a team of others

  • Engages in long term strategic planning for the data department in alignment with the KIPP Jacksonville growth strategy

  • Plans and advocates for the budget needed to acquire and maintain all major data systems systems

  • Manages relationship with all data and blended learning vendors to ensure programmatic and financial value of those contracts and agreements

  • Ensures team provides Superior Stakeholder Service to all parties within and outside of KIPP Jacksonville Schools

  • Other duties as assigned by their manager

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Technology, Technology Education, Education with Technology related coursework or other equivalent field
  • Demonstrated mastery of Microsoft Excel
  • A minimum of six (6) years of related management and leadership experience in the industry
  • Technical skill that includes: 
    • Fluency in SQL and 3+ years of experience in at least 1 scripting language (preferably Python).

    • Highly proficient in relational database design, Transact SQL, MDX and stored procedure development.*

    • Proven experience in the design and development of complex solutions using Microsoft SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS and SSAS.

    • Extensive experience in data modeling (normalized and multidimensional) & architecture.

    • Working knowledge of Amazon Web Services.

    • Hands on experience designing and building reports using BI applications such as Crystal Reports, SSRS and Tableau (preferred)

    • Strong skills in converting business requirements into technical design specifications and technical documentation skills

    •  Experience with student information systems (i.e. Powerschool, Focus Schools Software) and student assessment programs (i.e. Illuminate Education, NWEA/MAP).

  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and achieve results within required time, functionality, performance, quality and budget requirements

  • Understanding of system analysis, design, development, testing and quality assurance methodologies

  • Ability to quickly learn KIPP Jacksonville’s policies, regulations, and practices including our core values of high expectations, a growth mindset, commitment to team, trust, joy, and sustainability

  • Ability to write external functional specifications

  • Ability to assess, develop, and manage effective performance teams

  •  Excellent skills in the areas of technical, process improvement, team-building, and oral and written communications

  •  Some understanding of a variety of technology architectures including web-based architectures, client/server and centralized computing models

  • Extensive experience analyzing large datasets, with high accuracy and attention to detail

 

HIGHLY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An advanced degree in Technology, Technology Education, Education with Technology or related coursework

  • Knowledge of and ability to implement current information technologies and best practices

  • Coursework or training in data analysis and visualization; knowledge of coding/programming 

  • Expertise with specialized data integration and ETL tools such as Pentaho, Spoon, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)

  • Expertise with data reporting and dashboarding tools such as SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)

  • Experience with the above in an educational context.

  • Experience with education-specific information systems such as PowerSchool, DeansList, and Illuminate
