Company Description

KIPP Metro Atlanta seeks an experienced and knowledgeable hands-on Director of Finance who will lead and manage all budgeting and forecasting, daily accounting operations, audit, compliance, and monthly/annual financial reporting for a growing $48MM+ annual budget.  The Director of Finance will also manage the execution of payroll, accounts payable and receivable, the general ledger, vendor relationships, the annual audit process, and grants administration functions for the organization and its schools.
 
Reporting directly to the CFO, the Director of Finance will work closely with the CFO, Finance Team, Principals, Directors of Operations, and others to streamline systems, update policies, and establish standard operating procedures that ensure financial accuracy and provide maximum benefit to the organization. 

Job Description

Finance Leadership

  • Provide expertise and insight related to the financial direction of the organization including: forecasting, budgeting, cash flow, audit, fiscal policy and procedures, financial compliance and risk management, and finance operations
  • Develop reports and dashboards for leadership and the Board to analyze monthly financial results, operating results, and key metrics and lead executives through results analysis and action planning.  Coordinate periodic financial forecasting reports for senior management review.
  • Support the design and update of long term financial model for both steady state and growth scenarios including facilities solutions; lead ongoing evaluation and update of the financial model.
  • Design and implement strategies and systems to improve processes and create efficiencies in the finance operations across the entire organization and multiple stakeholders. 
  • Assess KIPP Metro Atlanta’s capital requirements and capabilities; develop long term financing structure and debt strategies; maintain reporting compliance relative to outstanding debt; maintain other debt related compliance
  • Support New Markets Tax Credits transactions to secure funding for capital projects, which requires complex entity, legal, tax, and process execution.
  • Generate effective analysis utilizing financial reporting, management accounting and operating metrics to drive results
  • Serve as a Finance leader for the organization including researching and implementing best practices, increasing technical knowledge and driving innovation where relevant
  • Evaluate and research best in class policies to recommend revisions and updates to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors regularly
  • Serve as primary liaison on financial data analysis for the Finance Committee.

 

Budget Leadership

  • Manage a $75MM+ operating budget for a growing charter school network comprised of 12 organizational entities
  • Lead the annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes by leveraging the organization’s budgeting solution, Advanced Budget Management (ABM), resulting in a financially prudent annual budget and more precise personnel forecasting for the organization.
  • Coordinate annual board approval of the budget and the approval of budget amendments as needed
  • Evaluate and implement budget systems that integrate with existing and planned financial systems.  Implementation will require process re-design, cross functional collaboration and change leadership, vendor management, the creation and delivery of organization-wide training and support.
  • Lead monthly finance meetings with School Leaders and Directors of Operations to review financial results, to review variance analyses, and to discuss financial items
  • Drive reporting and process improvements so the business has better visibility into revenue drivers and cost overruns
  • Monitor budget variances and report significant issues to the CFO
  • Coach others to make equity-based budget decisions by balancing financial analysis, knowledge, and judgment
  • Provide schools with support in the management of public funds including Title I, Title II, CSP, and state facility grants
  • Support the External Relations Department with grant & financial reporting and analysis
  • Support the Facilities Department with financial reporting and analysis of capital projects
  • Track spending against restricted grants to ensure maximum benefit and appropriate expenses

 

Reporting and Compliance

  • Proactively coordinate with local, state and federal agencies related to financial issues to ensure that KIPP Metro Atlanta receives all per student revenue earned. Develop strategies to optimize revenue for the organization’s strategic plan, requiring expert understanding of the Georgia charter funding formula and how it is applied within school districts.
  • Lead financial reporting compliance for the schools, school districts and other government agencies, Georgia departments of education and revenue, the public, KIPP Foundation and other entities as needed
  • Manage credit card processes, including balance availability, limit increases, fraudulent activity, issues and/or problems
  • Manage partner relationships with banking institutions and vendors
  • Present financial results to the Board
  • Ensure reporting requirements are met for the KIPP Foundation, school districts, banks, and other external stakeholders as necessary

 

Management

  • Coach and support the Finance Manager in creating scalable, replicable processes
  • Coach, and develop the procurement team, whose primary duties are credit card platform administration, school procurement support, and regional procurement execution
  • Create professional development opportunities and stretch roles for Finance Team members

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting required; MBA and/or CPA strongly preferred
  • Five to ten years of experience in a senior-level finance or accounting role with a successful track record; prior nonprofit experience is preferred
  • Technology savvy to efficiently and effectively manage data for financial reporting; knowledge of Financial Edge desired
  • Demonstrated success in developing and monitoring systems to manage internal operations and processes to meet monthly, quarterly and annual deadlines
  • Ability to anticipate the infrastructure and systems needed in a growing multi-entity nonprofit
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to translate financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers

KIPP Metro Atlanta is part of the nation-wide KIPP non-profit network of 255 college-preparatory, public charter schools educating more than 100,000 early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school students. KIPP Metro Atlanta currently operates eleven KIPP schools including four primary schools, five middle schools, one K-6 school, and one high school, as well as the KIPP Through College Program which supports students on their journey “to and through” college.  

The regional support team provides financial and operational support and oversight to KIPP Metro Atlanta schools, develops instructional initiatives designed to strengthen the schools’ academic programs, and implements each school’s high school placement and alumni services through the KIPP Through College Program.
