Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

At KIPP Chicago, middle schools include grades 5th - 8th.  Currently, we have four middle schools -- KIPP Ascend Middle, KIPP Academy Chicago, KIPP Bloom College Prep, and KIPP One Academy.  The content taught at each middle school varies slightly, but common classes are English/Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Literacy Centers, Math Centers, and Algebra.  At all campuses, we commit to holding ourselves to high expectations in service of our mission, and aligning on key mindsets and following through on key responsibilities. We also actively collaborate, coach, and learn in order to develop and evolve our skillset to achieve our goals for our students, schools, and region.  We bring a sense of team and a spirit of social justice to our work together and have fun! 

KIPP Chicago seeks a Bilingual (Spanish)or English as a Second Language (ESL) licensed teacher to provide English learners with both direct instruction and additional resources and supports in the general program of instruction.  This teacher will ensure that students keep pace with peers in the core academic content areas as well as develop proficiency in English in accordance with individual ACCESS goals. The Bilingual or English as a Second Language teacher reports and is coached by the Director of EL Services.

Job Responsibilities for Teachers

  • Teaching & Learning: Thoroughly plan and execute rigorous, high-engagement lessons and use best practice for student investment, assessment, and inclusion of culturally-relevant content

  • Student Feedback: Actively monitor student learning, track mastery data, and provide feedback to students to ensure their mastery of grade-level content and academic growth 

  • Student Culture & Family Engagement: Actively communicate with families and collaborate with peer teachers to facilitate safe, consistent, and joyful school culture where each child belongs 

  • Staff Culture and Professional Development: Follow through on department and grade-level initiatives and actively engage in your professional growth and development

  • Additional expectations for the Bilingual/ESL Teacher include:

    • Design learning plans for students in grades 5 - 8 based on ACCESS language test results

    • Provide pull-out instruction to individual and small groups in Math, Science, Reading, and Writing

    • Prepare students to pass the ACCESS test and exit the transitional program of instruction

    • Administer the ACCESS assessment to students

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree (required)

  • Written and verbal proficiency in Spanish (required) 

  • An active Illinois teacher license, with a Bilingual or ESL endorsement in Spanish - either a Professional Educator License (PEL) or a Transitional Bilingual Educator License (TBE).  If you don’t have either of these, but you do have a Bachelor’s degree and believe you could pass a Spanish fluency test, then please still apply and we may be able to help you acquire the license.   • Two years prior success teaching in “low-income,” urban communities (strongly preferred)
