Company Description

A bit about us

At Judo, we’re redefining business banking for the modern era. Built on teamwork, trusted relationships and a challenger spirit, we exist to better serve Australian SMEs. What began in 2016 as a bold idea has grown into one of the fastest‑growing new banks globally, with more than 30 locations nationwide.

We put our people and customers at the heart of everything we do. Our agility means we can say ‘yes’ when others say ‘no’, delivering personalised banking that helps businesses access the funding they need, when they need it. Relationships matter here – with our customers and with each other.

Our culture – a multi‑award‑winning place to work

We firmly believe that culture eats strategy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and that the most important investment we can make is in our people. Our values of Trust, Teamwork, Accountability and Performance guide how we work every day.

Judo was built from the ground up with a clear purpose: to be the most trusted SME business bank in Australia. Our customers and relationships are at the heart of how we work, not bureaucracy. We think differently, invite new ideas, and create an environment where people feel they belong and are empowered.

We’re proud to be externally recognised too – including being named on the AFR BOSS Best Places to Work list for four consecutive years. We are certified as a Great Place To Work® Australia organisation, being recognised as one of Australia’s Best Workplaces™ 2025, celebrating our dedication to fostering an inclusive, empowering environment.

Our vision is to build a world-class SME business bank and it’s our people that can make it happen.

Job Description

Now, about this opportunity…

At Judo, this role sits right at the heart of delivery. You’ll report to our Head of Engineering & Architecture and lead day-to-day execution, mentor engineers, and tackle complex technical challenges, all while staying close to the detail and the code.
We’re a lean, fast-moving engineering team that’s just delivered a core banking migration to Thought Machine. Now, we’re focused on what’s next, building scalable services and digital experiences that make life easier for our bankers and customers. You’ll play a key role in shaping how we get there.

If you love:

  • Leading engineering delivery within a squad or domain
  • Remaining hands-on — writing clean, maintainable, production-grade code
  • Coaching and mentoring engineers to lift capability
  • Driving consistent engineering standards and practices
  • Collaborating closely with product, architecture, and delivery leads
  • Creating clarity, momentum and ownership within a team

This just might be your dream job:

  • Own the delivery of engineering outcomes for a squad or domain (from build through to production)
  • Lead day-to-day engineering execution: prioritisation, allocation of work, and removal of blockers
  • Ensure high-quality engineering standards across code, testing, deployment and documentation
  • Act as a technical leader within the team, guiding design decisions and implementation approaches
  • Mentor and support engineers, building capability and confidence across the team
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering practices, ways of working, and team performance
  • Stay hands-on with development in a modern cloud-native stack (AWS/Azure, Thought Machine)

Qualifications

A little bit about you…

The skills you’ve picked up along the way:

  • Strong hands-on engineering capability (Python / AWS preferred, but polyglot mindset)
  • Experience building API-driven services and working with event-driven architectures (Kafka a bonus)
  • Proven ability to lead delivery within an engineering team or squad
  • Solid experience in debugging and solving complex production issues
  • Ability to coach and uplift others, providing clear, practical guidance
  • Strong communication skills — able to translate technical trade-offs and priorities clearly

Your life pre-Judo:

  • ~5–8+ years’ experience as a software engineer
  • Experience working on at-scale production systems
  • Experience contributing to or leading delivery within agile teams
  • Strong problem-solving capability and ownership mindset
  • Experience with core AWS services (S3, RDS, Lambda, ECS etc.)
  • Exposure to modern banking platforms or regulated environments is a bonus

If you don’t meet every requirement, we still encourage you to apply – your experience, mindset and potential matter to us.
