Job Description
TELUS Digital is seeking native Mandarin speakers in pairs for an onsite conversational speech audio data collection project. The Project will be completed at a designated studio location within the 23 wards of Tokyo, Japan (one of multiple available locations).
The specific location will be confirmed closer to the project start date.
The objective is to gather around 50 minutes of unscripted conversational audio between each pair.
This project requires you to participate as a pair with a friend, colleague or a family member.
But if you do not have a partner to participate with, we will pair you with another participant.
Task Description:
The participating pair will record 5 different conversations (around 10 minutes each) with varied tones and animated delivery. Topics need to vary and cover a range of natural, informal subjects. These audio recordings will be used to train speech recognition systems.
Examples of natural, informal subjects: hobbies, pets, travel, sports, etc.
Some topics that are a no-go: medical or health conditions, financial situation of yourself or others.
Both the participants will visit the recording studio at the scheduled time. A TELUS Digital moderator will be supporting with the task.
Please note each participant can only complete the project once.
While utterances will be recorded, the recordings won't capture the voice characteristics in a way that could uniquely identify participants as individuals. We won't be using the recordings as biometric identifiers.
Estimated time to complete the task: 2.5 - 3 hours, including setup time and breaks between conversations for selecting topics.
Expected project duration: March 2026 to May 2026.
Payment:
- 135 USD per participant for the whole task. (Both participants will be paid separately)
- Travel expenses are not reimbursed and are the participant's responsibility.
- This is an independent contractor opportunity.
- Payment will be processed via Hyperwallet through our AI Community platform.

Requirements:
To be eligible for the Project you must meet the following criteria:
- 18+ years of age
- Native Mandarin speaker and located in Japan
- Working proficiency in Japanese language.
- Basic English skills.
- Willing to travel onsite to one of our studio locations within the 23 wards of Tokyo for the project duration
- Both participants need to apply separately
