Salary Range: $66,991 - $84,268.00

SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Transportation, the Transportation Router coordinates district transportation services with schools and bus contractors and monitors bus contractor route performance. Interacts with district staff, bus drivers, bus contractor supervisors, students, parents, and the community at-large.  When requests for service, changes in service, or information regarding the quality of transportation service are received, the Special Education Router will facilitate quality service by meeting the needs of bus riders yet maintaining adherence to state, federal and district policies.  Analyzes the system for overloads, time of runs/routes, and non-compliant bus stops, and determine a course of action and make changes accordingly, revises and distributes detailed records of busing schedules to schools and contractors on an ongoing basis and prepare the yearly busing information mailing for students.

  • Provide back-up general telephone support as necessary.
  • Manage peak-time bus operations as scheduled by the Assistant Director of Transportation.
  • Coordinate and maintain the district transportation routing system in accordance with district policy while meeting driver and student needs.
  • Add, delete, and modify bus stops in accordance with safety and efficiency.
  • Maintain appropriate bus loading and travel times.
  • Maintain and promulgate route system information.
  • Inform and advise drivers and dispatchers about road construction projects and appropriate route modification.
  • Perform other functions and tasks as assigned by leadership.
  • Planning, development, design, maintenance, and management of the transportation routing system (Versatrans) by adding/deleting students, creating bus stops, assignment of students to bus stops, developing regular am/pm, midday bus and special needs runs and routes (school year and summer school).
  • Maintain records related to route operations, student discipline, and special transportation situations.
  • Investigating and responding to complaints related to student transportation issues.
  • Monitors performance of school bus contractors.
  • Investigates complaints related to route operations.
  • Takes appropriate action or makes recommendations to correct problems.
  • Maintains records related to route operations, student discipline, and special transportation situations.
  •  Investigates and implements solutions for transportation related problems, including student discipline, property damage, complaints and overloads .
  • Constructs and maintains computer generated information, including graphical boundaries, attendance areas, address maps, plan maps and maintains computer data related to attendance area, student eligibility for transportation, hazardous crossings, safe walking paths to school and other factors. 
  • Supports district stakeholders through collaboration on site specific transportation needs, represents Transportation on Individual Education Plan teams, performs other comparable duties of a like or similar nature as assigned. 
  • Maintains appropriate bus loading and travel times, and route system information.
  • Stays current with software upgrades and other changes in the route mapping program by attending user meetings and other educational training opportunities and working close with district technology.
  •  Trains and updates other transportation staff on the proper use of the route mapping software as required.
  • Promotes and supports the overall mission of the District by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment. 

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
 
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Two-year college degree or combination of experience and training providing the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
  • Minimum of two years routing/dispatching experience involving regular, special education, charters, field trips, shuttles and late activity routes.
  • Minimum of two years experience using VersaTrans transportation routing software, recommended
 
Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
  • Driver’s license.
