Team Description: The AI Foundations team plays a key role in bringing our vision for AI at Capital One to life. We work across the entire research life cycle, from collaborating with academic institutions to building practical systems for production. Our team partners with product, technology, and business leaders to apply the latest AI advancements to our business. Role Description: As a Distinguished Applied Researcher, you will drive the strategic direction of AI initiatives at Capital One by collaborating with Applied Science, Engineering, and Product leaders. In this influential role, you will guide and mentor a team of applied scientists and their managers. You will also represent Capital One in the research community by collaborating with renowned faculty members in the AI research field. Responsibilities: - Collaborate with cross-functional teams of data scientists, software engineers, machine learning engineers, and product managers to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer interactions with their finances. - Utilize a diverse range of technologies, such as Pytorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Lightning, and VectorDBs, to uncover insights from large volumes of numeric and textual data. - Develop AI foundation models throughout the entire development cycle, including design, training, evaluation, validation, and implementation. - Engage in high-impact applied research to incorporate the latest AI advancements into the next generation of customer experiences. - Translate the complexity of your work into tangible business goals using strong interpersonal skills. Qualifications: - Ph.D. with at least 4 years of experience in Applied Research, or M.S. with at least 6 years of experience in Applied Research. - Strong understanding of AI methodologies and ability to build large deep learning models. - Engineering mindset with a track record of delivering scalable models for training and inference. - Experience in delivering code libraries or platforms to enhance existing products. - Demonstrated ability to contribute original ideas and projects in the field, such as publications or first-author publications. Preferred Qualifications: (Specific fields of expertise) - Natural Language Processing (NLP): Experience with training large language models, publications in top conferences, and contributions to open-source projects in NLP. - Behavioral Models: Experience with modeling user behavior, including working with large-scale datasets, graph neural networks, and recommender systems. - Optimization (Training & Inference): Expertise in techniques such as model sparsification, quantization, training parallelism, and gradient checkpointing. - Finetuning: Knowledge of transfer learning, model adaptation, and deploying fine-tuned large language models
