Job Description

Manages employees responsible for the cleaning and sanitizing of the manufacturing facility and equipment. Enforces the policies and procedures surrounding the food safety and hygiene. Consults with management to address compliance issues and make recommendations to improve sanitation processes. Ensures all manufacturing equipment works properly and meets all governmental standards. Develops corrective plan for situations involving violations.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities of this position shall consist of, but not be limited to, the following:

General

  • Supervises the cleaning of equipment, work areas, and facilities:

  • Check sanitation operations regularly to ensure that processes, schedules, and standards of quality and safety are maintained

  • Oversee cleaning of facilities and equipment to assure readiness for production schedule requirements.

  • Effectively manage and utilize labor to complete daily, weekly and Master Sanitation Schedule

  • Assist Production Manager and QA Manager during scheduled and regulatory inspections and or annual audits

  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly reports which may include Chemical analysis, labor efficiency, and on time starts/ pre-op deviations.

  • Lead and oversee the development, implementation, review and maintenance of the facilities Standard Sanitation Operating Procedures (SSOP) program and Safe Quality Food (SQF) System

  • Supervise, direct and instruct Sanitation Team Members.

    • Follow good manufacturing practices and HACCP training, along with company SOP’s and SSOP’s.

    • Manage start-up to make sure equipment is in proper operating condition.

Personnel

  • Follow good manufacturing practices and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) training, along with company pre-requisite programs, SOP’S and SSOP’s.

  • Ensure that all employees are adequately and properly trained in safety, sanitation procedures, chemical handling and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s), etc.

  • Train employees in proper sanitation procedure and use of chemicals and equipment.

  • Ensure proper staffing is maintained, including interviewing and hiring new team members.

  • Implement and monitor training for new hires and continuing training of current team members.

  • Maintain attendance records, counsel employees with poor attendance, and follow up with coaching/discipline as appropriate.

  • Provide coaching and training for team members to ensure good understanding of the company’s SSOP, SQF program.

  • Appraise work performance: conduct appropriate reviews for team members; give coaching/discipline as appropriate in a consistent and timely manner.

  • Review, correct, and approve timekeeping tool to ensure team members are paid correctly each pay period.

  • Provide appropriate interpretation of company policies and safety procedures.

    Safety

  • Enforce all safety rules and company policies.

  • Ensure all HAACP and SSOP regulations are followed

  • Wears Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Maintain a level of plant and departmental safety to meet company goals.

Leadership

  • Oversee tasks as designated for implementation and maintenance of HACCP and the Food Safety programs.

  • Build and support a culture which values Personnel Safety and Food Safety.

  • Build and support a culture of openness and accountability within (and out-side) the assigned department.

  • Demonstrate professionalism; encourage and insist on positive attitudes and behaviors from team members.

  • Encourage team member initiative and innovation, and show recognition for effort and achievement.

Communication

  • Communicates with peers, subordinates, and leaders in an effective, timely manner.

  • Collaborates with remote employees and work as part of a team.

  • Suggest improvements; continuously improve the quality of all support activities.
    Identify gaps/opportunities for improvements specific to food safety and quality (i.e. sanitary equipment design).
    Assure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s) and company policies.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

 

Have a good relationship with Chemical Vendor

 

Qualifications

Required Education:         High School Diploma or GED*

 

Required Experience:       2 years** of experience in the food industry plus prior supervisory experience

 

Preferred:                          Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of successful supervisory experience in a food manufacturing environment

 

*A High School Diploma or GED is equivalent to two years of experience

**An Associate’s Degree or higher can be taken into consideration for 2 years of experience

 

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE and ABILITIES:

 

Proven understanding of manufacturing operations in the food industry.

 

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must work effectively with all levels of management and employees

 

Demonstrated effective leadership, problem solving, presentation, and employee motivational skills.

Proficient in Internet navigation, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Able to organize and prioritize in a multi-tasking environment.

  • Able to read and write legibly.

  • Demonstrated supervisory and management skills

  • Must have strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office programs

  • Knowledge in HACCP, Microbiology, Sanitation, Chemical Safety, Pest Control and Quality Systems.
    Understand and comply with government regulations relating to OSHA, FDA, USDA, and EPA.
    Experience in a meat or food product producing experience is preferred
    Experience with CIP and COP is preferred
    Experience interacting with the USDA or FDA.

  • Food plant sanitation experience.

  • General knowledge of cleaners and sanitizers used in a food processing environment.

  • General knowledge of control of microorganisms through Sanitation processes, including listeria, coliforms, and salmonella.

  • Flexibility to respond to changing needs throughout the shifts.

  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Solid ability to organize and prioritize.

  • Excellent “root cause” problem solving/troubleshooting skills.

The work environment is a plant / office setting with varying degrees of temperatures and noise levels. Exposure to manufacturing equipment movement and wet / slippery floors. Travel may be required.
