A significant proportion of our EHS team has over 20 years of professional experience, along with postgraduate qualifications in their areas of expertise, and are certified or chartered with relevant professional bodies.

Job Description

J.S. Held is seeking an experienced Senior Managing Consultant / Principal Consultant to join our growing Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) practice across the UK and wider EMEA region. This is an exciting opportunity to work with multinational and upper mid-market clients, supporting the delivery of complex HSE projects while contributing to the continued growth of our practice.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with commercial awareness and relationship-building skills. You will lead and deliver client engagements, support business development activities, and collaborate with colleagues across J.S. Held's global platform to help expand our presence in the UK and EMEA markets.

Job Responsibilities

Health & Safety

  • Support the development and implementation of Health & Safety strategies and Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, including policies, procedures, and frameworks.
  • Conduct H&S assurance, compliance reviews, and audits, with a strong understanding of UK H&S legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Apply site-based H&S experience within industrial, construction, manufacturing, energy, and utilities environments.
  • Facilitate safety culture, behavioural safety, and leadership initiatives, incorporating human performance principles where appropriate.
  • Lead or support incident investigations, root cause analyses, and the development of corrective and preventative action plans.
  • Design, develop, and deliver HSE training programmes and workshops for clients across a variety of sectors.
  • Act as a facilitator for leadership, risk management, and culture-focused client engagements.
  • Review, develop, and contribute to technical risk studies, assessments, and risk management programmes.
  • Partner closely with clients' corporate HSE, operational, and functional teams to develop practical solutions that address strategic and operational challenges.
  • Support the development and delivery of digital transformation, data analytics, and AI-enabled HSE initiatives to improve client performance and decision-making.
  • Serve as a lead auditor or audit team member on management system, compliance, and operational assurance reviews.

Business Development

  • Support the development and growth of the Health, Safety & Environment practice by identifying and pursuing new business opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and industry stakeholders.
  • Lead and contribute to proposal development, client presentations, statements of work, and competitive bids.
  • Participate in client meetings, discovery calls, and business development discussions to identify opportunities and understand client needs.
  • Support the development and execution of go-to-market initiatives, thought leadership campaigns, and sector-focused growth strategies.
  • Work closely with colleagues across J.S. Held's global practices to identify cross-selling and collaborative opportunities.
  • Represent J.S. Held at industry events, conferences, and networking activities to strengthen market presence and client relationships.
  • Contribute toward individual and team revenue objectives through a combination of successful client delivery, relationship management, and business development activities.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Engineering, Risk Management, or a related discipline.
  • 7-12 years of relevant Health, Safety & Environment consulting.
  • Strong knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and assessing Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems (e.g., ISO 45001).
  • Demonstrated experience leading H&S audits, compliance reviews, assurance programmes, and operational risk assessments.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analyses, and developing corrective and preventative action plans.
  • Proven ability to design and deliver HSE training programmes, workshops, and leadership development initiatives.
  • Experience facilitating safety culture, behavioural safety, human performance, and organisational change programmes.
  • Knowledge of technical risk assessment methodologies and experience contributing to risk studies and risk management programmes.
  • Experience working closely with corporate HSE, operational, and functional stakeholders to address strategic and operational challenges.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple engagements and deliverables simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing, presentation development, and workshop facilitation.
  • Experience supporting business development activities, including proposal development, scope definition, statement of work preparation, and client presentations.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the UK and EMEA as required.

Preferred

  • Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) or equivalent professional accreditation.
  • ISO 45001 Lead Auditor or Internal Auditor qualification.
  • Experience delivering projects across multiple jurisdictions within EMEA.
  • Experience supporting digital transformation initiatives, including the application of data analytics, digital tools, and AI-enabled solutions within HSE programmes.
  • Familiarity with process safety, operational risk management, ESG, sustainability, environmental management, or enterprise risk management frameworks.
  • Experience contributing to go-to-market initiatives, thought leadership, marketing campaigns, and industry content development.
  • Established professional network within HSE, industrial, energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, or related sectors.

Compensation

J.S. Held offers a competitive base salary for this role. The level offered will vary depending on a range of factors, including (but not limited to) experience, skills, qualifications, location, and the scope of the role.

In addition to base salary, J.S. Held offers a highly rewarding annual bonus scheme.

Location

Whilst our UK headquarters is based near Bank Station in London and the wider team operates a hybrid working model (typically attending the office twice per week), this role can be fully remote from anywhere within the UK. Frequent travel will be required.
