Job Description

We are seeking an experienced construction professional with strong technical, commercial, and analytical expertise to support expert witness and advisory services on complex construction matters. The role involves providing independent, high‑quality analysis and reporting across a range of construction and commercial disputes, as well as advisory commissions.

This position requires a solid understanding of construction practices, contracts, and commercial claims, combined with the ability to produce well‑structured reports suitable for legal proceedings. The successful candidate will work closely with senior experts, legal teams, and clients, while also taking responsibility for managing smaller, less complex commissions and contributing to business development and thought leadership.

Job Responsibilities

  • Attend site inspections and audits, producing clear and concise inspection notes
  • Carry out commercial reviews of projects at various stages of the construction lifecycle
  • Forensically review large volumes of project documentation to form independent opinions from a quantity surveying perspective
  • Assist with, or independently draft, expert witness and advisory reports (including Part 35 CPR‑compliant reports) in accordance with company procedures
  • Work collaboratively with experts from other disciplines on multi‑disciplinary projects in the UK and internationally
  • Ensure instructions are formally documented and reviewed to maintain expert independence
  • Manage fee estimates, project budgets, and scope changes, in coordination with Corporate Billing, and communicate any fee or scope changes to project stakeholders
  • Provide full client management from appointment through to completion, including scope, terms, conflict checks, fees, timelines, and service delivery
  • Attend hearings and demonstrate a willingness to develop skills in providing oral evidence when required
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, including health & safety, cyber security, and internal systems and processes
  • Maintain CPD requirements and professional registrations
  • Participate in marketing and business development activities, including networking with clients and lawyers
  • Author articles, insights, and other materials for publication related to the construction industry

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in a relevant discipline
  • Minimum of 5–10 years’ relevant industry experience
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Construction methods and practices
    • Construction costs, estimating, valuations, and cost management
    • Quantity surveying, tendering, and procurement
    • Construction contracts, contract administration, and commercial claims
  • Technically knowledgeable with practical experience in construction and contract practices within a chosen specialism
  • Clear understanding of the role and responsibilities of an Expert Witness
  • Proven ability to prepare high‑quality reports, spreadsheets, and data analysis suitable for legal or advisory use
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex matters clearly
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritise tasks, and meet client deadlines
  • Expected to lead smaller and less complex non‑expert commissions independently
  • Commercially aware, with the ability to contribute to team efficiency through effective utilisation and quality delivery

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree, preferably in Construction Law or a related discipline
  • Knowledge of legal procedures and dispute resolution processes
  • Experience supporting or participating in legal proceedings or expert witness appointments
  • Demonstrated interest in business development, networking, and work‑winning activities
  • Evidence of building internal and external professional networks
  • Regular attendance at industry seminars, conferences, and events
  • Ability to achieve and maintain a charge‑out rate appropriate to role and experience
