Job Description

We are seeking an Associate or Senior Associate to join our Strategy & Risk Advisory (S&RA) unit. This is a unique opportunity for an entrepreneurial, highly driven person with a growing skill set to join a team of dynamic, commercial, and intellectually curious practitioners. The S&RA unit provides political risk, government relations, and strategic intelligence solutions to multinational companies, development finance institutions, and diplomatic services operating in some of the world's most challenging and opaque markets. Our team has global coverage, but we have specific desks focused on: sub-Saharan Africa, MENA, LATAM, and Russia, Eastern Europe & Central Asia.

The ideal person for this role will have a good grasp of geopolitics and international relations, possess some specific regional or sectoral knowledge, hold some comparable experience, and be a dynamic and analytical thinker able to take on a variety of tasks. 

The Associate or Senior Associate will help support the S&RA unit's clients operating globally. They will support on a range of client deliverables including political risk briefings, complex strategic intelligence projects, integrity due diligence investigations, and news monitoring and analysis.

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Contributing to and conducting  political risk, government relations, and strategic intelligence projects across the different markets that the S&RA unit covers; 
  • Developing and building strong regional, country, and sectoral expertise;  
  • Supporting colleagues in developing trusted client relationships, while effectively contributing to client account management plans; 
  • Proactively identifying business development opportunities for development by colleagues within J.S. Held’s S&RA unit; 
  • Proactively working to establish and maintain government, private sector and other stakeholder relationships in specific markets or regions of focus; 
  • Supporting J.S. Held’s marketing initiatives through, for example, the production of expert thought leadership; and 
  • Representing J.S. Held at relevant events and eventually providing expert commentary to media outlets. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, for example, international relations, with a master’s degree preferred; 

  • A minimum of one years’ relevant experience, for example, in political risk, journalism, or investigations and disputes;

  • Good knowledge of, and a keen interest in, geopolitics and international relations; 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, particularly the ability to write clear and concise reports to tight deadlines; 

  • High levels of dynamism and proactivity, with a ‘can-do’, self-starter attitude; 

  • An ability to serve clients with the utmost discretion and diplomacy; 

  • French language skills; and

  • Other languages beyond English and French are an added advantage, for example, Arabic, Mandarin, Spanish, or Portuguese.
