Job Description

This self-starting individual will play a key Chapter role in the Southern California market and is responsible for driving fundraising success for JDRF’s Signature Events, including our three So Cal chapter galas (with an emphasis on the San Diego Gala) as well as leading and supporting the identification and moves management (qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship) of revenue opportunities primarily in the area of individual giving, with additional attention on integrated corporate opportunities. Reporting directly to the Executive Director and through collaboration with chapter Staff and volunteer partners, the Development Manager will champion a strategic approach to signature events program development including volunteer leader recruitment and engagement, audience development, corporate sponsorship and stewardship that will grow the program at all levels and ensure an extraordinary donor experience. 

In addition, working closely with the chapter staff and national partners, the Development Manager will help identify and qualify a pipeline of leads/donors who meet agreed upon criteria for ‘mid’, ‘high-mid’ and ‘major’ giving potential, within and outside of our event structure.  Utilizing the nationally provided donor data, the Development Manager will help build strategic and tactical plans to achieve and ideally exceed Chapter financial short, mid and long-term growth optimization expectations across all revenue streams through greater individual and corporate support, acquisition, and retention and upgrade. 

Using an account/relationship management structure, the Development Manager will be responsible for a mutually agreed upon individual/corporate giving

portfolio totaling the mid-to-high six figure range with early seven figure potential. She/he will partner with volunteer leaders and committees to facilitate donor development plan creation and execution, and partner in key components of the moves management process. This position will help ensure the Chapter creates a positive, engaged, inspired and rewarding experience with all new and existing donors.

The right person in this position is an integral member of the team, driving new business development, increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of fundraising, chapter operations, and community engagement.  This includes identifying and engaging new donors, managing, evaluating, and expanding cultivation opportunities, oversight of various event activities, outreach, and education support.  He or she organizes and executes select administrative components of chapter operations that support the donor giving cycle, from qualification to stewardship.

This role may be a home-based/telecommuter structured position (depending upon individual’s location.) This will require comfort with, and confidence in, high performance execution in a hybrid (non-office or occasionally-in-office) environment, with significant direct staff and supporter work accomplished through video teleconferencing and other digital means.   Chapter office visits (Tustin) and other in-person staff, volunteer and community gatherings throughout the Chapter geography will be required.  On-site event participation will also be required as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with chapter staff as well as national/regional staff resources to ensure the Chapter’s revenue growth for the Signature Events, including primarily the San Diego gala with support of the Orange County & Los Angeles galas
  • Collaborate with other chapter SE staff on volunteer committee development, table host recruitment and retention strategies, audience development, budget, timeline, marketing/PR, logistics and best practice implementation
  • Support the management & execution of the silent and live auctions, including working with the committee to procure highly desirable auction items, to ensure robust & successful live and silent auctions
  • Identifies, builds, and stewards relationships with community, civic and corporate leaders as an integral part of volunteer and donor engagement
  • Utilize and manage the SE-related posts for San Diego community social media (IG & Facebook) to increase visibility and promote gala-related programs and events.
  • Ensures personal accountability for meeting deadlines and responding to volunteers and other department requests
  • Maintain accurate and complete financial records and help ensure that the logistics, budget and timelines are met
  • Help determine if and where current giving is received and allocated, by whom, how much and why (history) as a foundation for portfolio creation and moves management planning and execution
  • Supports annual budget development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of related areas of business
  • In partnership with the Executive Director and chapter staff, manage the direction of the chapter’s individual giving program(s) in order to grow the pipeline
  • Assist in the identification, cultivation and stewardship of new volunteer leadership including future Board members and committee members
  • Provide strategic direction and execution support for Chapter functional leads where substantial individual giving plays a key role
  • Oversee the growth of the strategic pipeline development within the Chapter as it applies to new and increased individual and corporate giving in a major way
  • Manage CRM / donor database to plan, track and analyze results of development efforts.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of proprietary information
  • Establish a network through which he/she represents the organization in professional societies/organizations
  • Supports other fundraising events, chapter activities and programs as assigned
  • Maintains a good understanding of JDRF’s mission and research cure therapeutics

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 3-5 years of progressively responsible work experience including fundraising, event management, individual and corporate giving cultivation, solicitation and stewardship or relevant business/volunteer experience with a proven track record of success
  • Must be a self-starter, with the ability to collaborate as a team player
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong verbal and written communication. Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Effectively multi-task, establishes priorities, and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly efficient in time management and can meet deadlines under pressure
  • Team player that has the ability to interface with all levels of staff and volunteers
  • Thorough experience in CRM database use and portfolio management, Salesforce preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel & PowerPoint)
  • Understanding and working knowledge of philanthropy within the greater Southern California area
  • Understanding and knowledge of donor centered fundraising
  • Demonstrated experience in donor retention and upgrade
  • Volunteer development and management experience, especially around the staff-volunteer partnership
  • Works well within a matrix structure where more than one individual is providing guidance, feedback, counsel and support
  • Superior active listening, observation, analytical, and problem recognition and solving skills.  Exercise sound judgment
  • Ability to work and make judgments independently and take initiative, well-disciplined resourceful.
  • High capacity to assess the value, importance, and/or quality of activities and people
  • Ability to travel within the chapter footprint. Occasional evening and weekend work as needed

Additional Information

Target Salary Range: $66K-$70K per year
