JDRF’s Upstate NY Chapter plays a vital role in the organization’s success. In the most recent fiscal year, the chapter raised more than $3.3 million for JDRF’s mission. The Chapter has three strong Community Boards of Directors as well as leadership volunteers who are actively engaged and passionate supporters of JDRF across the Chapter territory, which spans Albany, Syracuse, Utica, Rochester, Buffalo and the Southern Tier.

Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director serves as part of the Upstate New York Chapter’s leadership team and plays a key role in the design, execution, and supervision of the Chapter’s overall fundraising strategy. This individual helps manage, evaluate, and expand the Chapter’s donor portfolio and increase the Chapter’s revenue. Approximately $1 million worth of annual revenue is represented in the Director’s portfolio - through donor cultivation and moves management, donor stewardship, signature events, and peer to peer programs (One Walk).  This position also includes recruitment and management of highly engaged volunteers and community board members.

This is a telecommuting position based in the Buffalo, Rochester, or Syracuse areas. 

Responsibilities

Leadership responsibility for integrating, coordinating, leveraging, and expanding a comprehensive revenue portfolio at the Upstate NY Chapter:

  • Leads targeted fundraising efforts to achieve or exceed fiscal year financial goals for numerous programs representing approximately $1 million in revenue. Achieve “at or under” expense budget.
  • Formulates, implements and leads strategies and tactics for chapter fundraising and development activities to sustain continued growth, maximum penetration of core market areas and opportunities for expansion where appropriate.
  • Oversees strategic vision and execution of fundraising programs and events across the chapter territory including galas, young professionals’ network, etc.
  • Manages a portfolio of constituents and leads efforts for high-level donor cultivation and engagement plans that result in giving and chapter engagement.
  • Utilizes CRM platform (Salesforce) daily to track portfolio and moves management progress.
  • Participates in budget building, forecasts and revenue reports.
  • Understands and serves as one of the key leaders in driving and implementing the strategic direction and purpose of the chapter.
  • Recruits, manages, and continually develops donors and volunteers.  Provides leadership, cultivation, acknowledgement, material support, and assistance in building and implementing annual plans around volunteer leadership.
  • Identifies, builds and stewards relationships with community, philanthropic and corporate leaders as an integral part of volunteer and donor prospect development.
  • Supports and maintains the vision, mission, priorities and guiding principles of JDRF.
  • Communicates and sets expectations clearly and appropriately.
  • Establishes and maintains departmental and organization-wide policies and procedures and support regional and national directives.
  • Represents the best interests, professionalism and integrity of JDRF in all activities and relationships through a unified message of the JDRF mission and a commitment to organizational standards and leadership by personal example.

Qualifications

  • 6 years of professional fundraising experience, with a clear record of achievement in a complex, mission-driven organization.
  • Experience in working with high-net-worth donors, volunteers and major corporations.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, human behavior and performance, and coordination of people and resources.  Volunteer management experience.
  • Successfully demonstrated high-impact fundraising event execution
  • Experience with portfolio-based constituent and donor management
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel & PowerPoint) as well as database platforms (SalesForce, Luminate Online and Greater Giving preferred).
  • Effectively multi-tasks, establishes priorities and works in a fast-paced environment. Highly efficient in time management and can meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Ability to develop, maintain and utilize relationships.  Capability to leverage relationships and negotiate agreements.  Familiarity with volunteer/staff partnerships.
  • Exceptional management, leadership and team-building skills.
  • Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills.  Demonstrates competency when handling diversified assignments.  High capacity to assess the value, importance and/or quality of activities and people.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Ability for presentation delivery, conveying ideas, and instructing effectively.  Superior active listening, observation, analytical and problem recognition and solving skills. 
  • Exercises sound judgment.  Ability to work and make judgments independently and take initiative.
  • Well-disciplined and a self-starter that is extremely resourceful and a strong team player.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Evening and weekend work occasionally required as needed.
  • As local guidelines allow, ability to travel locally across the Upstate NY Chapter territory.
  • As local guidelines allow, occasional overnight travel as needed.
