Job Description

BROAD FUNCTION AND SCOPE OF POSITION:

This is an European based position, as such candidates can reside in any city within the European Union. The position is within the JDRF Research Department and is expected to manage and monitor a portfolio of ongoing research initiatives partnered with various universities, institutions and other funding organizations such as the European Commission, across Europe. The candidate will work closely with the European Research Director to leverage new and build on existing JDRF relationships to explore new opportunities at the European Union and country levels, as well as with local organizations toward implementing new projects in type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

The candidate will work in a highly collaborative and transportfolio fashion and will be responsible for managing an active research portfolio with focus on public private partnerships. Due diligence and landscape analyses activities are a requisite part of this active portfolio management.

Our mission is highly translationally focused so the candidate should have an interest in public health and understand the basic concepts of drug development and translational research. The candidate will be expected to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with all stakeholders – scientists, board members, senior management, etc. The qualified individual will directly contribute to the implementation, oversight, and advancement of research projects and activities across several programs.

This Scientist position will report to the European Research Director and will participate in all aspects of the JDRF research program including providing scientific input to accelerate the progress of programmatic areas, contributing to future research strategies aligned with JDRF’s mission, and leveraging opportunities and optimize relationships with international diabetes research communities.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Strategy and Planning

o    Contribute to the regular assessment, review, and presentation to the Board of Directors and external scientific advisors of the status of the research portfolio.

o    Work closely with the program administrators to track and plan research budget.

Review and Oversight

o    Generating requests for applications (RFA) to address specific needs and gaps of the research programs.

Partnering

o    Scouting, securing, and managing research partnerships with companies, other non-profits, governmental agencies, etc.

o    Development to evaluate, establish, and manage new scientific partnerships with stakeholders such as European Commission, European interest groups, EU member state governments and small and large companies.

Communication

o    Preparation and presentation of due diligence materials to management and JDRF Board of Directors for governance approval purposes.

o    Generation and presentation of summary documents to lay and/or expert stakeholders.

o    Generation of content for public media outlets in collaboration with internal Marketing and Communications team.

o    Presentation of JDRF Research and priorities and special topics to both lay and expert audiences.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS & COMPETENCIES: 

  • Experience in the mechanisms of human disease required.
  • Experience in EU project management is required (FP7, H2020, IMI or other)
  • Working expertise in one of the following areas is highly desirable:
    • Policy and advocacy
    • External relations
  •  Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines demonstrated by strong organizational skills and a detail-oriented nature. Establish priorities in fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional collaboration and relationship-building skills. Ability to interface with all staff and volunteers. Must develop, maintain, and cultivate relationships.
  • Demonstrate creativity and ability to think strategically regarding scientific and technical opportunities or roadblocks.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Superior active listening, observation, analytical, problem recognition and solving skills.

EDUCATION:

  • Degree in Science (MS, PharmD, PhD) in pharmacology, cell biology, nutrition/metabolism, public health, or similar field required
