Job Description

The Vice President of Field Development oversees a chapter-based field structure charged with executing JDRF strategies for creating mission funding, galvanizing supporters, and growing revenue.  The position serves in a critical leadership role with the Senior Development team, as well as interfacing with other key departments to ensure the field structure is equipped to drive results across communities the organization serves while optimizing opportunities to provide input and intelligence in decision-making. In addition, they will work across departments on integrated, targeted and innovative problem solving that best serves the attainment of local goals in mission impact, revenue growth and increased supporters.

This individual will lead a multi-disciplined revenue development team whose main purpose is to serve and support all field staff in holistic portfolio management to meet and exceed revenue and mission goals.  In conjunction with the Senior Development team, the VP develops strategies and plans for implementation and is responsible for standardizing processes and materials, key resources and managing risk as it relates to revenue and mission opportunities and development efforts with individual donors and corporate support. In addition, the VP partners with national leadership, corporate development, annual giving, leadership giving, chapter leadership, mission, outreach and key internal stakeholders as well as volunteer leaders at the national and chapter level. 

This position is expected to resolve complex problems successfully and timely, and communicate clearly, and effectively. These decisions have impact on various processes and locations, thus a need to respond strategically and nimbly simultaneously. This role will need to provide and analyze information and make recommendations to the CDO. This role is exposed to sensitive and highly confidential information. Attention to detail is critical as it relates to the oversight of integrated development and organizational functions.

Responsibilities

  • Emphasize a positive organizational culture with a focus on integrity, collaboration, stewardship, mutual respect and valuing the contributions of all team members.
  • Execute strategic revenue plans to drive profitably, diversified and sustainable year-over-year growth in chapters, and partner with the National mission team and to align local and national mission impact strategy and scale at the local level.
  • Oversee a team of regional directors who serve as liaisons between chapters ad other national department leadership with a focus on collaboration to ensure alignment with the strategic direction and organizational goals.
  • Partner with the CDO and Senior Development team to prioritize field responsibilities.  Determine the appropriate sequence of activities based on strategy, resource constraints and dependencies.
  • Provide leadership for the national program team in core fundraising programs’ ensuring integration of national program team goals and collaboration throughout the chapter footprint.
  • Optimize opportunities to provide market input and intelligence in decision-making.
  • Participate as an ad-hoc member of various department teams across the organization to proactively identify and anticipate change management and internal communication needs that impact the field.
  • Serve as the engine driver to translate strategy from CDO, Senior Development team, organizational leadership, and Mission, MarCom, Finance and Technology to better support execution of strategy and vision from a mission funding perspective to the field.
  • Work cross-functionally with other departments to identify, implement, and improve workflow management practices and processes, as well as identify and improve integration among Chapters, National Office, and volunteer resources within the field.
  • Gather feedback and innovative ideas, analyze impact of change with leadership and end-user stakeholders, and implement process enhancements.
  • Apply extensive knowledge of development practices and disciplines in the areas of process, policy, metrics and resource utilization while operationalizing best practices to garner greater efficiencies and effectiveness.
  • Manage, coach, and develop direct reports, ensuring that the responsibilities, authorities and accountabilities are well-defined in the functions of stewardship, prospect management, development communications, foundation relations and innovation/ideation.
  • Develop field priorities including forecasting and budgeting, performance objective setting and performance review cycle and other projects as identified. 
  • Provide onboarding for Chapter executive directors (EDs) and Development staff, new ED orientation, and ED mentor programs, and other trainings as identified. 
     

Qualifications

  • BS/BA or higher or equivalent experience, plus a preferred minimum of 15+ years success in a field-based fundraising organization as well as leading multi-disciplined team in achieving organizational revenue goals.  Minimum of 7 years preferred in a leadership level management/ supervisory capacity for a multi-million-dollar organization.
  • Preferred proven success track record with achieving revenue targets while working within a matrix organization.
  • Exhibits the following traits to be effective in this role: Leadership, Diplomacy, Decision-making and solutioning ability, Financial acumen, Organization, Flexibility, Strategic thinking.
  • Proven team and leadership experience working with C-suite and all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated success with managing fundraising related and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage, monitor and work with a team to improve department budget performance.
  • Proficient in Salesforce and MS Suite.
  • Ability to analyze and integrate information from various sources and track progress to goal.
  • Adapt and respond to changing circumstances and priorities.
  • Strong strategic planning experience and tools to empower development teams to flourish.
  • Proven track record of collaborative leadership, management, coaching and development of staff at all levels. 
  • Desire to work in a team-based environment; able to work with others to achieve goals.
  • Ability to create consensus among cross-functional teams and bring closure to projects/initiatives.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation/communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to understand and work within a complex organizational structure.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and appreciation for the donor life cycle: identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Ability to creatively find solutions to problems and analyze feedback to create best practices by partnering with key stakeholders.
  • Estimated 20% travel is required.  Work setting is in typical office and/or home-based office.
