Job Description

The Associate Executive Director role is a great opportunity to join a strong Chapter team and work closely with the Executive Director in achieving the Chapter’s entire revenue portfolio ($4MM+).

The AED will be responsible for overseeing the management and financial growth of Walks, Rides, Galas, Golf and other Special Events.  He/she will lead and manage the development staff in both offices (Nashville and Knoxville) and will have oversight for all fundraising events across the territory.  In addition, the AED will have a Leadership Giving portfolio.

The AED will be the relationship manager to key constituent accounts, with a strong emphasis on corporate, and will have a substantial working relationship with volunteer event leadership. This important Chapter leadership team role requires a strong, collaborative leader who is outcomes driven and who requires minimal supervision from the Executive Director, with whom he/she will be partnering to bring the chapter to new levels of success.

Other responsibilities will include:        

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, manage the functioning of the daily operations.
  • Provide proactive partnership and support to the Executive Director, to help drive Chapter excellence, growth and execution. Serve as a thought partner, strategist, and executor in collaboration with ED’s vision.
  • Oversee the day-to-day management of key Core Program activity and additional duties as assigned, making certain that staff and volunteers are supported in the implementation of strategic and operational plans to drive fundraising priorities.
  • Direct and manage Development staff across two offices (Nashville and Knoxville).  Participate in staffing decisions and evaluate staff. Communicate and set expectations clearly and appropriately.  Provide ongoing growth and development by motivating, developing, and directing staff and volunteers as they work to achieve JDRF and Chapter’s priorities. 
  • Formulate, implement, and lead strategies and tactics for chapter fundraising and Development activities to sustain continued growth, maximum penetration of core market areas and opportunities for expansion where appropriate.
  • Analyze effectiveness of events and have strategic discussions with key steak holders to assess impact/needs.
  • Support ED in planning and execution of major donor reception events, including donor research and stewardship planning and execution.
  • Assist, at times, in the recruitment and screening for chapter positions.  When needed, assume interim responsibility for staffing vacant positions. If needed, coordinate training and orientation for new staff.
  • Represent the best interests, professionalism and integrity of JDRF in all activities and relationships through a unified message of the JDRF mission and a commitment to organizational standards and leadership by personal example.
  • Maintain a basic understanding of JDRF’s mission and research strategy.
  • Manage special projects as opportunities arise.

Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of progressively responsible and related fundraising and event experience with a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of philanthropy within the Nashville landscape.
  • Understanding and knowledge of donor centered fundraising.
  •  Demonstrated understanding and experience in the planning, managing, implementing, and analyzing special events (primarily Gala, Golf, Walk and Ride) with proven success.
  • Exceptional management, leadership, and team-building skills.
  • Volunteer management experience, especially around the staff-volunteer partnership.
  • Experienced in event committee development, succession planning and committee accountability.
  • Effectively multi-task, establishes priorities, and work in a fast-paced environment.  Highly efficient in time management and can meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Team player with the ability to interface with all levels of staff and volunteers.  Must develop, maintain, and utilize relationships.  Capability to leverage relationships and negotiate agreements.
  • Excellent written, oral, and communication skills.  Ability for presentation delivery, conveying ideas, and instructing effectively.
  • Superior active listening, observation, analytical, and problem recognition and solving skills.  Exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to work and make judgments independently and take initiative.  Well-disciplined and a self-starter that is extremely resourceful.
  • High capacity to assess the value, importance, and/or quality of activities and people.
  • Ability to travel required. Overnight travel as needed. Up to 30% travel expected (to East Tennessee).  Occasional evening and weekend work required as needed.
  • Proficient in event software systems and CRM database.  Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel & PowerPoint).
