Once upon a time TUSTNA, EKTORP, STRANDMON and all their Comfort siblings in the IKEA range were born, or the idea of these products at least! Behind our whole range there is a lot of hard work from our many skilled Engineers, and a lot of them started their career just like a Product Requirement Engineer (PRE). Working as a PRE is a good way to get to know the IKEA way of working and be close to the core of our product development! 

The IKEA product range is designed to be functional, great looking, affordable, of good quality and sustainable. This is what we call Democratic Design and it´s a true team effort to make it happen! Our development teams consist of many different roles, such as Technical Project Leader, Mechanical Design Engineer, Designer etc. And this is where you as a PRE come into the picture as well! 

What is the role all about? 

The PRE is an important player in the team, when it comes to identifying and creating product requirements forming the end products, with an aim to ensure that our products will meet all the legal standards and the customer specific prerequisite. We would say that the impact is real and deep. You will be doing this by defining and creating product requirements for end products and take part in reviewing prototypes to define product validation tests during the development phase. Furthermore, it´s about securing that our product information is up-to-date and according to IKEA documentation guidelines and standards. You will work closely with other Engineers in the product development teams, as well as have a close dialogue with the purchasing organisation and suppliers to secure successful product implementation. In a nutshell, it´s a role with focus on getting it right for the safety, as well as that we secure the quality level meets customers expectation. It will be highly rewarding work. And yes, it will be a lot of fun! 

Who are we looking for?

You are an Engineer maybe in the beginning of your career, with a university degree in Engineering with focus on Product Development or equivalent. You have a curiosity and interest in comfort products (upholstered products like sofas, armchairs, beds and mattresses) or even some experience from working with comfort products. An innovative thinker and interested in upholstered and non-upholstered furniture to be to the point!

It´s a merit if you have some experience in working with product requirements and/or product documentation. It´s about asking yourself continuingly “are we testing in the right way to find what we are looking for?”. You understand the need behind compliance work and it´s all about the quality perception and the safety of the customer – but for this you need to be so curious about how our customers are living their lives in their sofas, beds, mattresses etc, both today and how they´re doing it tomorrow.  You work in a structured way based on good analytical skills and find it interesting to work within a network of many different stakeholders, both internal and external ones. Furthermore, you have good communication skills and build good relations based on trust. IKEA of Sweden is a truly global environment, with colleagues from all over the world and you therefore need to be fluent in English both verbal and written. 

The first step into our organisation 

You will start your journey at IKEA by being part of an introduction program where you will learn how we develop upholstered products that fulfills the needs and dreams of our customers in close cooperation with our suppliers. You will experience our different capabilities collaborating to develop the final product and at the same time build your network. This role includes some travelling.
