BACKGROUND - WHAT?
There are many regulations and standards to comply with when developing home furnishing products. In order to comply with tomorrow’s safety regulations, it’s important to constantly maintain today’s product range and develop new solutions that could be introduced to the market. This project aims to develop an IKEA unique lock system that prevents multiple drawers from being open at the same time.
JOB DESCRIPTION – HOW?
The main purpose is to develop an IKEA unique lock system that prevents multiple drawers from being open at the same time.
The following parts must be included in the work method:
• Benchmark to evaluate existing solutions
• Generate market unique design concepts
• 3D modelling, preferable in SolidWorks
• Simulations or similar to evaluate if the solution would meet the test demands. This could be performed by the student(s) or with support from a FEA engineer.
• Patent check to ensure the developed solution does not interfere with existing patents
• Cost estimation of the final solution
It’s encouraged to use GALANT lock solution as reference. Being cost conscious is important for IKEA. Hence, the solution should match GALANT lock solution in cost.
Physical samples are not necessary to be developed. However, if time allows it, physical samples are highly appreciated.
You are a master or bachelor student within the field of mechanical engineering or similar. We would like to see that you have a creative problem solving ability, pay attention to details and have a methodical work process. You should have basic skills in CAD modelling in order to develop a 3D model of the final solution.
It’s beneficial, but not required, to have basic knowledge in FEA simulations in order to be able to perform simulations for design verifications.

The assignment will be carried out at location in Älmhult or as per agreement. Potential physical tests will be carried out at university and/or at IKEA Test Lab in Älmhult.
The end result should be delivered as a report along with files of 3D model(s) and 2D drawing(s) of the final solution.
