Linux/UNIX III Engineer/Administrator

Overview:

As an Expert-Advanced UNIX Engineer, you will be responsible for assisting with design, administration, monitoring, optimizing performance, and troubleshooting both Application issues as well as automating routine task as needed by our customers, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The mission critical environment is comprised of virtual and physical Redhat Linux and Windows servers and is a high visibility element within USPTO’s expanding IT services portfolio. This is a full-time position, on a 24x7 operations team, with a work location at or near the USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, VA supporting the Server and Software Services Branch Section.

Responsibilities:

  • Write custom scripts to automate USPTO Smoke test procedures
  • Automate routine tasks using Python/Java/Perl/JavaScript/Bash
  • Support all USPTO applications as assigned and resolve any issues as they arise
  • Coordinate and support major projects for critical and highly visible projects supporting key functional groups across all of USPTO
  • Provide project level support across multiple functional groups within the OCIO organization and OCIO customers
  • Troubleshoot system issues quickly and effectively
  • Assist with providing administration, troubleshooting, configuration, installation, deployment, maintenance, and upgrades for highly available systems
  • Develop and document procedures for startup, execution, shutdown, backup, and recovery of production systems
  • Demonstrate capabilities to work in a dynamic environment, translate user needs into actionable project plans, and see those plans through execution while balancing needs for short-term, high-priority tasks
  • Individual must be able to work independently and must have demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills
  • Provide day-to-day senior level operational support including responding to incidents, troubleshooting, giving suggestions, and executing corrective action
  • When necessary, interact with software vendors to reach problem resolution; may include opening a service call, providing logs, and responding to advice received by phone call or email
  • Support for application build configuration design and testing
  • Responsible for development, maintenance and testing of contingency plans
  • Ensures effective security, operation and peak performance of UNIX/Linux server
  • Working closely with development teams to design, implement and support USPTO’s information systems and application platforms
  • Participates in the setting of objectives, strategies, plans, programs, performance standards/measures and procedures, as a member of the IT Management team
  • Development of customer support processes, technical planning, and work coordination
  • Good prioritizing and time management skills
  • Able to function and adjust in a fast pace and busy environment
  • Does not require training nor guidance to evaluate new frameworks and easily comes up to speed as a self-starter
  • As a member of a 24x7 team, provide onsite support as necessary
  • Flexible work schedule to include weekends, holidays and nights

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficient in Python, Bash, Ruby, Java and JavaScript
  • 7+ Years of Senior UNIX Engineer/Administrator experience supporting a medium to large user base (3,000-10,000 users)
  • Familiarity with Selenium, Canary, and Test Complete
  • Technically fluent in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, both on physical and virtual systems, Windows, HP-UX, AIX, Tomcat, Oracle, Apache/iPlanet and MySQL
  • Does not require training nor guidance to evaluate new frameworks and easily comes up to speed as a self-starter
  • Must work on-call as specified, nights, and weekends
  • Troubleshooting and perform other assigned tasks with AIX, HP-UX
  • Willing to learn new technologies in line with USPTO present and future needs
  • Must have or be eligible for a Public Trust Clearance or higher
  • Great documentation skills and willing to work both independently and with a team

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Experience with code migration, Oracle Database, Mysql and data management
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux certifications a plus
  • Familiarity with network, storage, Oracle, Cassandra, and AWS

Hours/Shift:24x7 on-call, night and weekend shifts

Education: Bachelor's Preferred. Work experience will be considered in lieu of degree.

Work Location:Alexandria, Virginia.

Must be either a Green Card or US Citizen. Must be eligible for a government Public Trust (SF-85) clearance
