Job Description

We are looking for a Data Architect to join our rapidly growing team and you’ll have an incredible opportunity to build a career within a start-up like environment while helping researchers expand the reaches of human knowledge.

A key objective of the Enterprise Architecture team is to bring a more disciplined design process to how we initiate major change, particularly those which involve a high degree of technology, process and data change. The team will work closely with both business and technical teams to initiate, design, deliver and govern across a wide range of projects in support of business and digital office strategies.

The Data Architecture team is a rapidly expanding team which is engaged in delivering on an enterprise-wide data management initiative encompassing delivery of:

  • A Data Catalogue - including data models and a data glossary to ensure data is clearly understood
  • Data Governance - including data stewardship, and data standards and policies to maintain and assure data quality across the business.
  • Master Data – to provision accurate and timely data to systems, services, and processes
  • BI & Analytics – including a data lake, a data warehouse delivering core flexible & scalable datasets, a presentation layer, AI/Machine Learning, and the development of an end-to-end analytics service

You will be a part of implementing data projects against this central initiative. You will work closely with other technology, project and delivery leads to delivery on target architectures, do proof of concepts and inspire change into the business. You will need to be comfortable working across a number of projects at once. You will possess superb communication and problem-solving skills. A solid sense of ownership is also critical because this role drives outcomes for initiatives with executive level visibility and that directly impact our bottom line.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Support development of the data architecture with requirements gathering and use cases and demonstrating knowledge from market, external partners and research.
  • Support and enable the build and maintenance of ETL processes, including data quality, documentation and testing.
  • Support the building and maintenance of data pipelines from source to data lake and on to the data warehouse & presentation layer.
  • Ensure solutions and data management processes are consistent with Enterprise data models and strategy.
  • Facilitate the execution of the roadmap and vision for information delivery and management, including the enterprise data warehouse, data lake, BI & analytics, and data management.
  • Ensure the ease of usability, flexibility & scalability of data lake and warehouse.
  • Support definition of data security procedures on data access, handling, usage and storage.
  • Support delivery and migration of new data software, applications, pipelines and services.
  • Support creation and maintenance of data models & data relationship diagrams
  • Documenting data assets and their related processes using appropriate tools
  • Managing or facilitating analysis of current data systems, problem identification, and resolution
  • Conducting data model and data integrity reviews with solution delivery teams
  • Ensuring data strategies and architectures are in regulatory and security compliance
  • Identifying technical risks and communicate trade-offs for mitigation
  • Maintaining currency with the latest data related technology trends and digital best practices


  • Experience in supervising data sources, data lineage, data quality, completeness, redundancy vs. replication, data dictionary, data models, metadata and master data
  • Experience gathering and analysing system requirements focused on the data elements across capture, processing, storage and distribution.
  • In-depth understanding of database structure and principles across both relational and no-SQL database technologies e.g., MongoDB, PostgreSQL etc.
  • Knowledge of AWS data platform. (S3, Redshift, Athena, Glue, RDS, DynamoDB etc.
  • Knowledge of Python/Spark/PySpark is preferred
  • Experience in POCs on new and emerging technologies
  • Experience in data migration projects
  • Familiarity with data visualisation tools, including PowerBI
  • SData modelling experience including for Normalised, de-normalised (Star schema) and NoSQL.
  • Experience developing Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) specifications and mappings to support data conversion and integration
  • Experience with metadata management approaches and tools
  • Knowledge and experience working within Academic Publishing or elsewhere in the Academic industry is preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including teamwork, communication, facilitation and negotiation
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Working experience of managing partner relationships across multiple teams and disciplines, both business and technology
  • Understanding of agile methods and processes, and capability of supporting agile project teams by providing advice and guidance on opportunities, impact and risks, taking account of technical and architectural debt
  • Motivated and driven by achieving long-term business outcomes
