Job Description

MISSION

  • Ensure the availability, performance, integrity, and security of multiple customers’ databases within a shared services team.
  • Perform daily operations, Admin-level support, backups/restores, as well as changes and optimizations.

CONTEXT

  • Shared production team managing databases for several customers (mid-sized companies, large enterprises, public/private sector).
  • 24/7 production environment with strict SLAs and high availability constraints.
  • Close collaboration with application, systems, network, security, L1/L2 support teams, and project managers.
  • Typical environments: SQL Server, MySQL

MAIN ACTIVITIES

1. Database operations and monitoring

  • Ensure proper functioning of database instances (production, pre-production, test, development) for various customers.
  • Monitor availability, capacity, and performance using monitoring and metrics tools.
  • Manage database user accounts, roles, and privileges according to defined security policies.
  • Perform routine administration tasks: start/stop instances, log checks, disk space management, preventive maintenance.

2. Incident management and Admin-level support

  • Take ownership of Admin-level (L2/L3 DB) incidents raised by monitoring tools or support teams.
  • Diagnose and resolve performance issues (slow queries, locks, contention, indexing).
  • Handle availability-related incidents (instance crashes, corruption, replication/cluster issues).
  • Communicate clearly and regularly with internal teams and customers about incident status, ETA, and action plans.

3. Backups, restores and business continuity

  • Implement, control, and optimize backup and restore strategies for databases.
  • Perform regular restore tests to ensure backup reliability (DR/BCP scenarios).
  • Contribute to high availability and disaster recovery setups (clustering, replication, mirroring, AlwaysOn, Data Guard, etc. depending on technologies).
  • Document and improve recovery and failover procedures.

4. Changes and production deployments

  • Prepare and execute maintenance operations, version upgrades (DB engines, patches), migrations, and configuration changes.
  • Participate in Change Advisory Boards (CAB) providing database expertise.
  • Write change documentation: impact analysis, implementation plans, rollback plans, intervention windows.
  • Perform sensitive interventions requiring downtime or with service risk, often outside business hours (evenings, nights, weekends).

5. On-call duties and out-of-hours interventions

  • Participate in the on-call rotation for major incident management (24/7 depending on schedule).
  • Intervene urgently outside normal business hours in case of crisis or critical incidents impacting production databases.
  • Ensure availability and quality of service during on-call periods, in line with SLAs.
  • Log and close on-call tickets, document actions taken and solutions implemented.

6. Optimization, documentation and continuous improvement

  • Analyze performance and propose optimizations (indexing, configuration tuning, execution plans, partitioning, archiving).
  • Contribute to standardization of configurations and procedures within the shared team.
  • Write and maintain technical documentation (customer runbooks, procedures, operating guides, diagrams).
  • Enrich the knowledge base with lessons learned and best practices.
  • Propose and participate in industrialization and automation actions (scripts, jobs, tools).

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of hands-on DBA administration in operations/run.
  • Rigorous, service-oriented, autonomous, strong team player.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and communication skills (written/verbal).
  • Fluent in English; technical English required. (Adjust as needed.)
  • Able to manage priorities and perform under on-call conditions.

TECHNICAL ENVIRONMENT & LANGUAGES:

· Relational DBMS (good skills in at least 1–2 of them):

· Microsoft SQL Server (installation, configuration, backups, AlwaysOn, SSMS, etc.).

· MySQL (administration, replication, backups, tuning).

· Backup and restore:

· Backup methodologies (full, differential, transaction logs, point-in-time).

· Performance and tuning:

· Execution plan analysis, indexing strategies, statistics management.

· Identifying slow queries, lock management, server/instance configuration tuning.

· High availability and replication (depending on technology):

· Clustering, mirroring, AlwaysOn, Data Guard, RAC, logical/physical replication, etc.

· Systems and environments:

· Solid basics on Linux/Unix and Windows Server (from a DBA perspective).

· Understanding of storage (SAN/NAS), network, virtualization, Cloud DB services (AWS RDS, Azure SQL, etc. if relevant).

· Tools and methods:

· Monitoring / APM tools

· Ticketing tools

· Knowledge of ITIL best practices (incidents, problems, changes).

· Rigorous, reliable, with a strong sense of responsibility (production and on-call context).

· Strong analytical skills, calm under pressure, and reactive in crisis situations.
