Job Description

MISSION

The Director, Finance & Accounting is a results driven leader who is responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial reporting for Indigo Books & Music Inc. This role is responsible for various functional areas of accounting, including reporting, banking and internal audit. This role includes managing existing technical accounting policies and implementation of new accounting pronouncements in compliance with IFRS.  In addition, this position will be responsible for income tax and sales tax.

This role is responsible for being a key business partner to the Executive Team and Senior Leadership Team in supporting strategic business and operational decisions.   

KEY PERFORMANCE METRICS

  • Timely and accurate preparation of financial statements and management reporting on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis
  • Ensuring adherence of reporting to IFRS standards 
  • Development of high functioning accounting team through strong leadership and implementation of a training and development program
  • Involvement in accurate and timely cash flow forecasting
  • Ensuring company wide compliance of internal controls
  • Ability to develop and execute on process improvements that drive accuracy and efficiency
  • Timely response to internal queries for information and/or assistance
  • Positive feedback from both internal and external contacts

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Functional

  • Oversee the accurate and timely delivery of financial reporting, management reports and variance analysis on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis
  • Ensure accounting compliance with IFRS, includes preparing complex technical analysis
  • Monitor all new accounting pronouncements, analyze the impact on Indigo, adopt new policies, communicate changes as needed
  • Work with accounting operations team to prepare ongoing cash reporting and forecasting
  • Maintain all accounting policy documentation and educate internal stakeholders
  • Lead internal audit function for the company
  • Maintain internal control narratives and necessary ICFR design and scoping memos to manage financial reporting risks
  • Assess the impact of changes in the business on internal controls, update narratives, design new controls and review system testing results as needed
  • Lead the preparation of the corporation income tax return and prepare income tax provision working paper at quarter/year end
  • Lead the preparation of sales tax returns in various jurisdictions 
  • Answer/research sales tax enquiries from the business and update sales tax table as required
  • Act as a primary liaison with all external auditors
  • Provide financial expertise, analysis, and recommendations in cross-functional team project setting and present findings and specific recommendations to management
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
  • Ensure the execution of team deliverables and adapt team priorities based on changing needs
  • Recognizes, communicates and advises on weaknesses in business operations, guiding the business to solve root causes and improve performance
  • Set/adhere to team budgets, as applicable
  • Embrace and seek out technology that can improve operations
  • Challenge the status quo by consistently identifying areas for improvement, diagnosing issues and working to resolve them

  • Support Indigo goals by executing on short to mid-term departmental goals (1 year)

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Work Experience / Education / Certifications

  • CPA designation required
  • University degree in Accounting, Business or Finance
  • Minimum of 7 years of audit, accounting and/or reporting experience to include managing accounting policies, audit, reporting and taxation
  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience with increasing leadership roles, including leading large teams having a mix of transactional and professional staff

Competencies / Skills / Attributes

  • Strong technical knowledge of IFRS, sales tax and income tax
  • Knowledge of SAP
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work with people at all levels of the organization
  • Strong knowledge in Excel, Word and Powerpoint
  • Proven leadership skills for both project and people
  • Must have initiative, curious mind and a self-starter
  • Solid record of delivering results
