The salary range for this role is $80,000- $100,000.

The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University is seeking a dynamic and visionary Director of Development to lead our comprehensive philanthropic efforts.

For more than 75 years, the Kinsey Institute has promoted and fostered a greater understanding of human sexuality and relationships through groundbreaking research, outreach, education, and historical preservation. Working with the Executive Director, faculty, senior staff, and IU Foundation’s designated liaisons, you will help maximize private, charitable support for the Institute and generate the momentum to reach the philanthropic and programmatic goals for the Kinsey Institute.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Development with a dual reporting line to the Executive Director of the Kinsey Institute, this position plays an integral role in the philanthropic and outreach efforts of the Kinsey Institute.  As Director of Development, you’ll lead the strategic direction for a comprehensive and coordinated development program that includes all aspects of fundraising, including annual fund, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, and major and principal gifts with emphasis on major gift fundraising. The position collaborates closely with the IU Foundation’s internal services to ensure a comprehensive and donor-centered advancement program.

Education & Experience: 

• Bachelor’s degree required. Master's degree preferred
• Minimum 5 years of experience in fundraising or relevant experience in a large complex organization including proven success in major gift development work
• Prior experience in a complex, results-driven environment, including evidence of effective strategic planning and implementation of action plans
• Experience successfully interacting with support staff, academic faculty, administrative leaders, or similar stakeholders
• An understanding of the importance of, and demonstrated success in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion among staff, donors, and volunteers
• Must demonstrate comfort discussing scientific findings related to sex and sexuality, and being in the presence of erotic art and materials
• Combination of education and experience will be considered 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Excellent knowledge of fundraising, as well as demonstrated skills in major and planned gift solicitation and experience with major gift prospect management systems
• Ability to handle multiple demands and/or manage complex and competing priorities
• Possess an ability to work comfortably within an academic environment that possesses many competing interests, priorities, and opinions
• Proven analytical skills – proficiency at framing and solving complex problems, proficiency in using large databases (e.g., standard fundraising data) to set goals and identify opportunities for improvement particularly as it relates to gift officer performance and staff performance
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering collaboration across advancement disciplines
• Success in developing authentic relationships with a wide array of internal and external stakeholders
• Ability to apply critical thinking to analyze and interpret information and/or data
• Skilled in the use of discretion to maintain privacy, confidentiality, or anonymity
• Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
• Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills (able to tailor communications to multiple audiences such as the Chancellor, major donors, advisory council, and university leadership)
• Precision, timeliness, clarity, and accuracy in written communications
