We are looking for a PhD candidate to help turn complex optical and biomedical data into robust digital biomarkers.
Job Description
This project will sit at the intersection of machine learning, signal processing, multimodal modelling, and translational health data science. It is designed for candidates who want to do rigorous doctoral research while working close to the experiments, samples, and decisions that shape real-world technology. Depending on the final work plan, the research may focus on biomarker discovery, representation learning, uncertainty-aware prediction, model robustness across cohorts or instruments, or interpretable AI for screening and stratification.
About your role | What will you be doing?
Analyse optical, experimental, and clinical datasets generated through iLoF’s platform and collaborations.
Develop machine-learning and statistical models for classification, risk prediction, biomarker discovery, and representation learning.
Build reproducible pipelines for preprocessing, validation, benchmarking, and uncertainty quantification.
Investigate generalisation and robustness across instruments, sites, cohorts, or pre-analytical conditions.
Collaborate closely with optics and assay teams to improve not only model performance, but also the way data is generated.
Contribute to scientific publications, internal tools, and translational IP.
Qualifications
MSc in Data Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field.
Eligibility to enroll in a PhD programme.
Strong Python skills and solid foundations in machine learning, statistics, and data analysis.
Experience with physical signals, time series, multimodal datasets, or experimental data is highly valued.
Comfort working in a multidisciplinary environment with scientists from non-data backgrounds.
Nice to have
Experience with deep learning, Bayesian modelling, causal inference, explainable AI, or MLOps.
Familiarity with health data, biomarker modelling, or scientific machine learning.
Interest in working close to experimental and clinical teams.
