As a Release Train Engineer, you will be working with our Product teams in one or more of our domains within the BA Tech Delivery Team to bring agile change to life. We are doing this by role modelling and embedding agile ways of working and applying SAFe as an overarching umbrella within BA Tech Delivery. 

Job Description

Purpose of the role:

  • The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is a servant leader and coach for the Agile Release Train (ART).  

  • The RTE’s major responsibilities are to facilitate the ART events and processes and assist the teams in delivering value.  

  • RTEs communicate with stakeholders, escalate impediments, help manage risk, and drive relentless improvement. 

  • A leader for the Agile Release Train (ART) who possesses a strong understanding of Agile and can execute Agile processes and manage it.  

  • RTE will work closely with QA, Product, DevOps, Delivery, Architecture and Engineering to directly impact the customer’s ability to meet PI goals.  

  • RTE will be the master organiser of the Agile Teams’ workload for each Program Increment (PI) and will define the agenda for and orchestrate the activities during each PI planning session. 

Accountabilities:

  • Facilitate Program Increment (PI) planning, ensuring roadmaps and backlogs are continuously updated. 

  • Assist with tracking the execution of features and capabilities. 

  • Coach leaders, teams and scrum masters in Agile practices and mindsets. 

  • Facilitate system and solution demonstrations. 

  • Ensure that the Agile processes are fully executed.  

  • Work to guide and coach others (scrum leaders) about the Agile Release Train (ART) and Lean-Agile practices. 

  • Assign, coordinate, and review work and activities of programming personnel. Oversee the ART and the SAFe framework to ensure its functioning and productivity.  

  • Reporting status updates and metrics to senior leadership on the performance and efficiency of the ART.  

  • Facilitate risk management of the ART.  

  • Work to define working agreements for the ART.  

  • Support the Product manager when necessary. 

This role may require travel and working from multiple sites/locations. Willing and able to travel to participate in meetings, workshops, and other related activities.

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience. 

Desired qualification:

  • Recognised Agile qualifications, e.g. SAFe® Release Train Engineer and SAFe® Program Consultant 

Skills:  

  • In addition, successful release train engineers possess strong communication, negotiation and critical thinking skills, the desire to be a lifelong learner and a solid acceptance of the servant leadership philosophy.  

  • As a servant leader, RTEs are expected to: Support all teams' commitments. 

  • Strong ability to collaborate effectively with cross functional teams within a matrix management environment. 

  • Well-practiced in recognising and responding to priorities, based on specific information provided. 

  • Effective stakeholder management (internal and external) and building positive working relationships. 

  • Confident working under own initiative, as well as part of a team. 

  • Good, all-round competence to be able to identify and contribute to the continual improvement of software engineering capability across IAG Tech and British Airways. 

  • Proficient negotiation skills, able to persuade and influence others. 

  • Fluent written and spoken English. 

Experience:  

  • 4-5 years progressive work related experience with demonstrated proficiency in multiple disciplines / technologies / processes related to the position as well as 2-4 years managing teams and / or significant complex projects. 

  • Experience of developing in an Agile and/or DevSecOps environment is highly desirable, including unit testing, behaviour driven development, and continuous integration/continuous deployment. 

  • Experience of operating across multiple countries and cultures is desirable, but not essential.
