Job Description

Position Name: Site Surveyor

Division / Function: Projects & Installation 

Location of the Job: Northeast & Central, Nigeria

Reports to: Senior Site Surveyor, Project Manager

Role Summary

Husk is seeking a Site Surveyor to join the growing team in Nigeria. The overall objective of this role is to coordinate field staff in mapping out land boundaries, identification of mini-grid sites in order to create optimal pipelines of sites/villages suitable for the implementation of mini-grids uses, and ensuring that the generated sites meet the minimum site selection criteria. 

This role requires hands-on experience with engineering instruments and knowledge of GPS and GIS systems. The individual should also be passionate about contributing to solving one of Nigeria’s most critical challenges – energy access deficit. This position provides the opportunity to join a growing team that is changing the face of rural electrification in many countries in Asia and Africa, including India, Nigeria, etc.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support all GIS/site scoping related activities across Nigeria (and other potential markets).

  • Regularly interact with various internal and external stakeholders for site identification/selection activities.

  • Producing maps using GPS, surveying instruments, digital images, and satellite photographs

  • Assessing land due for redevelopment

  • Monitoring changes in the land before, during, and after the construction process

  • Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas, using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS)

  • Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, and reports of surveys to describe, certify, and assume liability for work performed.

  • Record the results of surveys, including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features

  • Assessment of soil resistance and other soil parameters to analyze the long-term impact of civil work with special focus on PV installation.

Community Engagement:

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with local communities affected by mini-grid projects.

  • Communicate effectively with community leaders, residents, and other stakeholders to address concerns and promote understanding of project benefits.

Safety Compliance: 

  • Develop and enforce safety protocols and procedures for all logistics activities related to the mini-grid, including transportation of equipment and materials.

  • Conduct or coordinate safety training programs for logistics staff and ensure all personnel involved in logistics operations are aware of and adhere to safety standards.

  • Conduct regular risk assessments of logistics operations and identify potential hazards. Develop mitigation plans to address these risks.

  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training sessions, and compliance documents related to logistics operations.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 years of work experience and 1 year of experience in a similar role within the energy/infrastructure/development sector.

  • Graduate from a leading institution with a related degree in GIS/Surveying and other related subjects. Postgraduate degree and/or related professional qualifications, a plus.

  • This position requires an in-depth understanding of GIS/Survey capabilities, critical thinking, and the ability to provide time-bound solutions to the benefit of the company. 

  • Excellent skills with QGIS or ArcGIS, Google Earth, Microsoft Office tools and project management tools (MS Project, Power BI, etc)
