Team Flourishing Manager

  • Full-time

Company Description

Huckberry is an independent online retailer and magazine for those who love adventure. We're a team of 80ish based in San Francisco, California with offices in Columbus, Ohio.

Over a million and a half young, active professionals trust us as their leading resource for emerging brands, gear, and lifestyle inspiration.

We're independent (read: Bit.ly/TheHuckberryStory), and have been called "the future of eCommerce for guys." We look forward to meeting you.

Job Description

We're looking for a Manager of People and Flourishing to be a custodian of the Huckberry culture, help the Huckberry team thrive at work and in life, and support our executive team in developing and executing our business strategy.

This is a business role with an HR specialty, and we'd ideally like this hire to be able join our executive team in 12-18 months with a little coaching.

You Might Love This Job If

You’re instinctively drawn to environments where a group of individuals can flourish. You believe in the power of diversity and inclusion, and their positive impact on the bottom line. You understand the importance of feeling fulfilled at work, and have the intelligence to back up how training, development, team get-togethers and being heard can knit a diverse team together so it can fly. You read broadly in the areas of HR strategy, motivation, well being, behavior change, diversity and inclusion, as well as other areas that aren't even on our radar—yet.

The Details

You’ll be our first employee dedicated exclusively to human resources, so we’ll need you to have a good number of years of recruitment and people management under your belt. Overtime, you'll build and lead your own team, but at first we'll need you to bring an entrepreneurial spirit to the Manager of Flourishing position.

While recruiting will be a part of your job, we are looking for a true business partner who's an HR strategy whiz, and has developed and managed their own teams.

Recruitment: You'll own Huckberry's recruitment process, identifying gaps in our team and the best routes to finding a diverse group of exceptional employees.

Team Development: Here at Huckberry, we have a wide variety of teams —ranging from buying and creative to finance and ops — and you'll be tasked with leading their continuing education (i.e. book clubs, conferences, offsites, speakers etc). Our ideal candidate has experience building and managing their own teams, and can empathize with the opportunities and challenges of assembling a strong, healthy team.

Culture: We’re social, and we need you to be social too. You’ll organize our regular events, and surprise us with ones we hadn’t thought of.

Support: You’ll work closely with our office managers, who will offer a helping hand as you grow the Huckberry team.

If you were working for us, here are some of the things you might have done last week:

  • Organized a meeting with the design team and listened to their concerns about workload and a potential skills gap
  • Brainstormed new ways for HR to support our business strategy
  • Worked with the executive team on developing the itinerary for their quarterly strategic review
  • Given a member of the team some positive feedback on their approach to work, along with advice on how they might improve
  • Lead a meeting with the executive team to discuss your proposed floor plan for our new office
  • Spotted a team member that seems a little unhappy and arranged to have lunch together
  • Researched courses to develop the team personally and professionally
  • Talked through a draft job description with one of our managers
  • Shared a coffee with our office manager to catch up on an event you’re planning
  • Spent an hour ensuring we're on top of HR compliance requirements

Okay, that was a lot (and probably more than a week's work) but you get the idea.

Qualifications

Huckberry's mission is to inspire and equip more active, adventurous, and stylish lives. First and foremost, our mission needs to get you fired up.

Next, we should talk Huckberry's team values, which we've tried to weave into every facet of the company — from hiring to performance reviews. Since you'll be the custodian of our team values, it's important that they resonate with you. Here are Huckberry's team values:

  • Growth Mindset
  • Proactive
  • Scrappy
  • Team Player
  • Intellectually Honest
  • Strong Communicator

You also need to really like people, and have a genuine desire to help them grow. Hopefully, you cultivate a growth mindset yourself, and keep up-to-date with the science behind the very latest in HR strategy, health and wellbeing, what builds a strong company culture, diversity and inclusion, and how all of this shapes business success.

To Apply

You need to know Huckberry and what makes us tick.

If you think you could bring something remarkable to this role, please respond in SmartRecruiters with a two paragraph elevator pitch, resume, links to your social profiles (or at least those you want to share), and your answers to the three questions below. You will need to answer these three questions for your application to be considered.

Q1: Tell us what you've been reading or listening to in the areas of motivation, well being, and behavior change that would influence your actions at Huckberry. What book would you recommend? What's your favorite TED talk?

Q2: Tell us the most exciting thing you’ve recently learned — one that’s relevant to this role.

Q3: Suggest a half hour session for our annual conference that will help to build the Huckberry culture, and, ultimately, the Huckberry brand.

Applications that do not include answers to these questions will not be reviewed.

Thank you. We’ll have a read through and let you know if we might be right for each other!
