The office of Angelo Iacono, the Member of Parliament for Alfred-Pellan, is seeking a parliamentary assistant for his office in Ottawa. The incumbent reports to the Member and is primarily responsible for conducting research, collecting data, analysing findings and preparing summaries or reports that are of interest to the Member of Parliament or for committee business.  The ideal candidate is proactive, is perfectly bilingual, has exceptional communications skills and thrives in a dynamic work environment.

Job Description

  • Perform reception duties, including welcoming visitors of the riding to Parliament Hill and organizing with security, obtaining gallery passes and question period passes, if necessary.
  • Conduct additional research and assignments relating to parliamentary committees as requested by the Member of Parliament.
  • Attend relevant stakeholder meetings and events, and organize any necessary follow up.
  • Monitor riding media and social medias, community issues, news items, and current events, and ensure relevant colleagues are informed of them
  • Plan and provide logistical support for tours, events and outreach activities organized by the MP on the Hill.
  • Monitor daily proceedings in the House.
  • Triage all incoming correspondence and invitations to the Parliament Hill Office.

Qualifications

  • University degree or post-secondary education from a recognized institution in political science or a related field, combined with experience working with senior management OR an acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience. 
  • Experience working in an office in an administrative support position.
  • Knowledge of administrative methods, techniques and practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Excellent communications skills and command of written French.
  • Tact, diplomacy, high degree of discretion and skill in building and maintaining professional work relationships.
  • Thorough understanding of Canadian politics and parliamentary services.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and meet strict deadlines.
  • Understanding of government priorities and messages.
  • Ability to respond effectively to short-term requests.

Assets

  • Work experience assisting an elected representative at the Federal or Provincial Level.

Operational requirements

  • The nature of the position may require the incumbent to occasionally work long hours and some weekends.
