Job Description

Patient Care & Clinical Leadership

  • Lead daily rounds on general surgery patients, managing pre- and post-operative care
  • Document comprehensive progress notes and place appropriate clinical orders
  • Perform bedside procedures including I&D, wound debridement, central line placement, chest tube placement, and wound vac management

Consultation & Surgical Support

  • Evaluate new consults in the ED and for admitted patients across general, HPB, colorectal, vascular, and specialty surgical services
  • Provide skilled surgical assistance in the OR, supporting complex procedures across multiple specialties
  • Manage a diverse patient population, primarily adults with occasional pediatric patients (age 14+)

Team Collaboration & On-Call Coverage

  • Communicate effectively with attending physicians, residents, and interdisciplinary team members to prioritize patient safety and clinical excellence
  • Respond to emergent OR cases during on-call coverage (approximately 6 times per month from home with 1-hour report time)
  • Provide weekend on-call support (approximately 1-2 weekend days per month, scheduled in advance)

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Current certification and licensure as a Nurse Practitioner and/or Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan
  • Current BLS, ACLS, ATLS/PALS, DEA, and CSL credentials
  • Clinical experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner
  • Demonstrated proficiency with bedside procedures (I&D, wound debridement, chest tube placement, central line placement, and wound vac management)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Surgical first assist experience, particularly in an OR setting
  • Specialized training or certification in surgical assistance
  • 2+ years of acute care experience in a surgical setting

 

Candidates with PA/NP experience will be considered regardless of prior OR first-assist experience, with surgical first-assist experience considered preferred.
