Job Description

General Summary:

Provides leadership in the coordination and delivery of quality, compassionate patient care within the Radiation Oncology department. Utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide, delegate, supervise, and document care and teaching of patients and families. Effectively communicates pertinent patient and family information to the healthcare team and participates in finding solutions for variances from patient goals while ensuring implementation of solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Assess and monitor patients undergoing radiation therapy for acute and chronic side effects, including skin reactions, fatigue, nausea, and other treatment-related complications.
  • Educate patients and families regarding radiation therapy procedures, expected outcomes, potential side effects, and self-care management strategies.
  • Collaborate with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure safe and effective patient care delivery.
  • Verify patient positioning and immobilization prior to radiation treatment to ensure accuracy and safety in accordance with established protocols.
  • Document comprehensive nursing assessments, interventions, patient responses, and outcomes in the electronic health record with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain compliance with radiation safety protocols, HIPAA regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide emotional support and psychosocial care to cancer patients and families throughout the treatment continuum.
  • Coordinate care transitions and communicate discharge instructions, follow-up appointments, and supportive resources to patients and families.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice projects to enhance patient outcomes and departmental efficiency.

 

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • BSN preferred.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Clinical knowledge and analytical abilities necessary to formulate effective nursing care plans.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of professional nursing services.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, and hospital personnel.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Current licensure by the Michigan State Board of Nursing.
  • Health care provider certification (BCLS).
