Role Overview

As a Genetics Counselor, you will play a vital role in providing expert counseling and follow-up care to diverse patient groups, including prenatal, pediatric, adult cancer, general genetics, and neurogenetics. You will work under the supervision of primary physicians and division heads, contributing to interdisciplinary conferences, formulating diagnoses, and coordinating genetic testing. Your work will directly impact patient care and outcomes, making a significant difference in their lives.

Qualifications

What You Will Do

  • Elicit patient history and provide counseling for prenatal, pediatric, adult cancer, general genetics, and neurogenetics cases.
  • Prepare and present cases at interdisciplinary conferences, contributing to differential diagnoses.
  • Coordinate genetic testing and document all patient visits, ensuring comprehensive care.
  • Counsel patients on all aspects of their genetic diagnoses, offering support and guidance.
  • Consult on inpatient cases and act as a liaison with internal and external sources.
  • Supervise and train genetic counseling students, and participate in departmental research and education initiatives.

What You Will Need

Required Qualifications

  • Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited university graduate program.
  • Certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics or American Board of Genetic Counselors.
  • Previous experience in genetics, with counseling, diagnostic, and interpretation experience in prenatal diagnosis, amniocentesis, teratogen, dysmorphology, and/or cancer genetics.
  • Sound knowledge of the State's genetics network and related agencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in pediatric and adult neurogenetics.
  • Familiarity with interdisciplinary team collaboration in a healthcare setting.
