The Complex Coder is responsible for accurately coding professional bedside services in acute hospital settings rendered by employed and contracted providers. This multispecialty professional-fee coding position supports providers across a broad range of medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties requiring the ability to interpret diverse clinical documentation and apply appropriate coding guidelines across a wide variety of patient populations, diagnoses, procedures, and clinical scenarios.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and analyze diagnostic and procedural information from patient medical records using established coding principles
- Code complex outpatient cases with precision to support accurate reimbursement and billing processes
- Abstract and compile patient data for medical research projects, care evaluation, and administrative decision-making
- Maintain strict adherence to coding guidelines, third-party reimbursement policies, and regulatory requirements
- Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and quality benchmarks
- Contribute to provider-patient continuity through accurate, reliable data management
- Optimize reimbursement outcomes while maintaining coding accuracy and integrity
Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
- Additional specialty coding certification required or five (5) years coding experience.
- One to two (1-2) years college or additional coursework in Accounting, Business, Healthcare Administration or Medical Record Sciences preferred.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, disease processes, medical terminology, pharmacology, and coding systems.
- Minimum of two (2) years coding experience required.
- Specialty coding experience preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
- Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), CPC, or CCS certification required.
