Job Description

Asheville office in downtown location seeks a full-time legal assistant to join the civil litigation team. Opportunity for some level of hybrid work after sufficient training period.

Core duties and responsibilities:

  • Handling incoming/outcoming mail.
  • Communicating with clients, courts, other counsel, etc.
  • Drafting correspondence and legal documents.
  • Docketing.
  • Scheduling meetings, depositions, mediations.
  • Managing each civil attorney’s calendar.
  • Courthouse runs (locally).
  • Assisting attorneys with preparing for depositions, hearings, meetings, trials.
  • Other administrative support needed in connection with this smaller office in larger firm.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and experience in civil litigation including knowledge of applicable deadlines, procedure requirements, local rules, and court filing procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite/Outlook and internet research.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat and/or Kofax PDF.
  • Exceptional proofreading, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • In depth knowledge of legal terminology and principles.
  • Exceptional proofreading skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented and work well on a team.

Qualifications

Preferred – Bachelor’s degree, associate degree, certificate or similar course of study in the area of administrative support, legal secretarial assistance or paralegal studies.

  • Prior success in a professional office environment, preferably a law firm or legal department.
  • Knowledge of case management software preferred.
