Job Description

He aha te tūranga - About the role:

Start early 2026 | Hybrid (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch)

We’re on the lookout for an experienced and technically confident Database & Integration Administrator to join our team on a 12-month fixed term contract. This role is perfect for a seasoned DBA whose bread and butter is Microsoft SQL Server — someone who builds and optimises databases from the ground up, not just maintains them.

As part of our Database & Integration team, you’ll play a key role in the design, build, and optimisation of relational databases that underpin critical systems for Hato Hone St John. This is high-impact work — our systems support essential services relied on by communities across Aotearoa.

What you’ll do

  • Design, build and optimise relational databases for applications and reporting.
  • Develop and maintain secure database integrations for internal and external consumption.
  • Contribute to data architecture and governance discussions to support scalable and resilient solutions.
  • Monitor and tune database performance, implement high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Ensure the privacy and security of personally identifiable information (PII).
  • Support automated reporting and proactive system monitoring to ensure reliability.

Qualifications

Ko wai koe - About you:

You’re a hands-on, developmental DBA who enjoys creating elegant solutions from scratch and working within complex environments where performance, reliability, and accuracy matter.

You’ll bring:

  • Extensive experience (5+ years) as a DBA working with Microsoft SQL Server in a mid-to-large New Zealand organisation.
  • Deep understanding of SQL Server architecture, performance tuning, security, and integration.
  • Proven ability to design and implement new database solutions — not just maintain existing ones.
  • Exposure to modern data management tools such as Microsoft Azure, Snowflake, or Databricks (an advantage).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and a focus on reliability.
  • Full unconditional right to work in NZ
  • Relevant tertiary qualification or Microsoft certifications (preferred).
