He aha te tūranga - About the role:

Introducing an exciting new position as a Clinical Hub Doctor.  The objective is to improve patient outcomes, ensuring we respond appropriately and safely to 111 callers by providing clinical assessments by telephone or using video technology and definitive treatment where possible. It is important that those who need an immediate ambulance are prioritised, and our lower acuity callers receive appropriate care and are navigated to a more appropriate health care setting where practical. This position involves performing advanced secondary clinical triage for our less urgent patients (specifically those categorized as orange and green calls), as well as managing referrals from our Clinical Hub to ensure patients receive optimal care.

You will join a team of call handlers and dispatchers who manage the initial calls and a multidisciplinary team of paramedics and nurses who are also providing advanced secondary clinical triage.

The Clinical Hub Doctor may support our clinical team by conducting additional assessments for cases where patient care could benefit from their expertise, potentially leading to decisions on alternative transport or direct treatment i.e by issuing a prescription or a referral to another community health provider such as a physiotherapist. The core responsibility of the Clinical Hub Doctor, however, is direct patient interaction.

This role at Hato Hone St John (HHSJ) Clinical Hub aims to provide expert secondary triage, guidance, and referrals. By delivering clinically informed advice and culturally sensitive care tailored to the health needs of individuals and their whanau, this position contributes to improved patient outcomes and community wellness throughout Aotearoa.

Hato Hone St John has an established structure to provide clinical support to its paramedic staff via our three Deputy Clinical Directors (Medical specialists) who also provide on-call support to our clinical hub. The expectation is that you will have a strong working relationship with the medical team.
