Job Description
Job Summary:
Independently assess the needs of the student body, develop and organize educational, social and cultural activities.
Job-Specific Responsibilities:
Within the Division of Continuing Education (DCE), the Crimson Summer Academy (CSA) works with talented, low-income students from approximately 40 area high schools to help them achieve admission into highly rated colleges and universities and succeed there. The Assistant Director of the CSA manages the student admission process, which includes outreach to the high schools, follow-up and tracking applications, reminders, and preparing files for the Admissions Committee.
Other duties and responsibilities include:
Recruiting, Training, and Managing Mentors: Collaboratively works with Director and Associate Director to make decisions to recruit, hire, manage and approve time of 25 undergraduate and recent college graduates who work all year long as mentors and RAs. Trains and manages mentors for the summer and academic year. Acts as a liaison between mentors and Crimson Scholars to foster productive relationships between faculty, mentors, and students.
Policy Management: Collaboratively works with Director and Associate Director to develop, create, and implement policies and practices related to the mentors’ and RAs’ interactions with faculty and high school students that comply with all University policies.
Career Exploration Fieldwork Instruction: Creates course materials and content and teaches in the summer session that helps students explore potential careers to pursue after graduation. As a faculty member, attends faculty meetings, and votes on academic policies and decisions that impact summer academic program.
Supervision of College Visits: Supervises and attends preselected college visits in the spring and fall term with high school students, including annual week-long April vacation break trip.
Conflict Resolution: Reinforces polices and ensures issues are handled and resolved appropriately with input of the Director. This process can include a variety of interventions, including conflict resolution, corrective, action, up to and through termination.
Communication Management: Organizes and manages mentor-student communication and follows up during the academic year.
Alumni Engagement: Collaborates with CSA staff to develop programming with programs’ alumni. Collaborates with Director and Associate Director on special events involving alumni and/or current students.
Working Conditions:
This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. Hybrid workplace models in place at DCE with a minimum of 2 days per week on campus. DCE or department may adjust these as necessary or appropriate.
During the seven-week summer session, which runs from mid-June to early August, the Assistant Director must be on campus daily from the start of the program until its conclusion. During the summer session, the Assistant Director will also have evening and weekend responsibilities.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
- Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
- Supervisory experience
- Excellent organizational, logistical, and time management capabilities
- Demonstrated experience with recognizing and responding flexibly to unexpected situations with sound judgement and clear sense of boundaries
- Proficiency with databases and other forms of technology
- Multilingual, preferably fluent Spanish speaker
Additional Information
- Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week
- Compensation Range/Rate (including Shift Differential if applicable): $80K - $95K/annual

The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) comprises four academic units serving about 30,000 domestic and international students annually, which allow Harvard to meet the learning needs of intellectually curious and highly motivated students from high school through retirement. Established in 1910, the Harvard Extension School (HES) offers access to Harvard faculty for a diverse community of adult learners, enrolling about 15,000 students. HES offers over 1,000 open enrollment courses — 85 percent of which are accessible online — and provides flexibility through noncredit, undergraduate, and graduate courses, including degrees, certificates, and a premedical program. The Harvard Summer School, founded in 1871, offers around 450 credit and noncredit courses both on the Harvard Campus and online, catering to 9,000 high school, college, and adult learners. Additionally, it offers up to 15 international study abroad programs, hosting up to 300 students each summer. Harvard DCE Professional & Executive Development delivers over 140 noncredit programs annually, reaching more than 3,600 participants through online platforms and its executive development center in Cambridge. The Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement offers about 140 peer-taught courses to approximately 550 active members.
Work Format Details
This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
