Job Description

Design, document, and support standard and custom rail service equipment, functional systems, and manufacturing.

  • Work with the Systems Engineers and Product Engineers to develop/create engineering concepts/designs in CAD system for new and modified mechanical and hydraulic systems on current production machines, equipment under development, and any custom-built equipment.
  • Serving as part of the Designer team, ensure that the designs on all new and modified products meet all requirements and applicable internal or external standards.
  • Improve upon current Mechanical/Hydraulic/Pneumatic designs by reducing cost and increasing robustness and reliability.
  • May work individually or as part of a team to produce full documentation for new product introduction (NPI) or current product offerings.
  • Communicate project status through group meetings, presentations and design reviews.
  • Meet deadlines to ensure projects are completed within acceptable time and cost targets.
  • Must make design trade-offs to ensure lowest overall cost, highest reliability and best in class performance.
  • Work with manufacturers/vendors to source and evaluate purchased components and with manufacturing to produce or assemble manufactured components and assemblies.
  • Support external and internal customers in their requests
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the design process; collaborate with other departments to provide a “best in class” quality product
  • Identify, develop and deliver design/drafting related training to improve the overall organization’s development
  • Contribute to mechanical systems-related troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Prepare detailed drawings and material requirements from verbal information, sketches, specifications, and standard layouts
  • Revise and release existing drawings as required by Engineering ChangeRequest or project redline/markups with minimal amount of direction.
  • Design and release parts/assembly/drafts with efficiency and manufacturability in mind
  • Coordinate development of documentation packages with both internal resources and external partners
  • Meet deadlines to ensure projects are completed within time and cost targets.
  • Identify opportunities and drive re-use of systems/components
  • Perform other reasonably related tasks as assigned by management

Qualifications

Basic Required Qualifications: 

  • Associates degree in Engineering Technology, Design or similar field of study
  • Minimum of 10 years of design experience.
  • Working experience in manufacturing or engineering services firm.
  • 10+ years of experience working on 3D CAD systems and PLM Software
  • Experience designing to ASME (Material and Drafting) standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education or Experience

  • Experience with the use of Creo 4.0+, SolidWorks or Solid Edge/NX.
  • Experience with PLM software. Teamcenter experience ideal.
  • Good understanding of mechanical systems
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and principles for custom product assembly.
  • Experience in design/documentation of machined parts, formed sheet metal, and complex assemblies/weldments.
  • Knowledge of DFM, DFA, and Design to Cost
  • Experience designing heavy mobile equipment
  • Knowledge of ferrous materials’ properties and characteristics
  • Knowledge of welding principles, practices and design of weldments
  • Possess good problem-solving skills, and the ability to develop innovative solutions.
  • Desire and motivation to further knowledge and abilities.
  • Must have ability to work autonomously with little direction.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Must have the ability to manage several tasks at once.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Must have excellent English communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Must interact well in a multi-discipline, multi-location engineering team environment.

Technical Skills

  • The ability to read and understand basic design documents, hydraulic and electrical schematics, symbols, and related product drawings
  • Proficiency using basic functions of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
