Help Hamilton lead the Way in Urban Mobility. We have a position available for a passionate engineering assistant to help shape the future of transport in Hamilton.
In this role you will assist in the development and delivery of local road improvements with an emphasis on biking & micromobility and public transport. These projects provide opportunities for safe and sustainable movement of people around our city.
You will be a strong team player with ability to work closely with consultants and contractors to help drive the required transport objectives whilst managing any risks to Hamilton City.
Some key outcomes include:
- Be a champion for biking, walking, and public transport
- Assist with the planning and development of the Biking and Micromobility improvement programme.
- Assist with the planning and development of the Public Transport infrastructure improvement programme.
- Assist with the reporting of changes to the Traffic Bylaw registers associated with project implementation.
- Assist in the consultation processes associated with the various projects
- Complete traffic and pedestrian surveys as required to assist in decision making and monitoring
- Communication and liaison with key stakeholders and advocacy groups ensures excellent relationships, knowledge sharing and coordinated outcomes.
- Maintain good working relationships with key Group/Units within the organisation to ensure the best
- outcomes for the transport network.
- Actively participate, comply, and engage in all health & safety activities, policies, and practices including Civil Defence.
- All customer enquiries and information requests are responded to within the required timeframes.
- Incorporate environmental and wellbeing consideration through design, procurement, and project delivery.
- Contribute to special projects as required.

Qualifications

- 1 – 2 years of experience of working in local government or consultancy (preferred, but not essential)
- A passion for change and innovation in the transport space.
- Certificate in a National Diploma in Civil Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering Technology or previous experience in similar fields/areas (preferred but not essential)
- Awareness of traffic engineering principles, transport law, NZS 3901 and relevant statutes and regulations
- Influencing skills, able to encourage others’ behaviour and outcomes to support goals.
- Excellent numeracy and communication skills (both verbal and written)
- Experience using AutoCAD for transport designs (preferred but not essential)
- A good level of computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Office applications
- Ability in integrating technical information into decision making
- A collaborative working style, building strong networks and relationships with team members, across organisation, stakeholders, and customers.
- Proactive and able to use initiative to solve problems or create opportunities
- Ability to work autonomously and manage workload, you will be a self-starter.
- Knowledge of basic project management techniques
- Ability to operate independently, anticipate requirements and monitor workload
- Understanding of Health and Safety law and practice.
- Full, clean, and current NZ drivers’ licence
