Job Description

Working under the general direction of the Lab Manager and collaboratively with the Clinical Chemist and other Team Leaders to plan, organize and direct the day-to-day technical operations of the Corporate Point of Care (POC) Program.

  • Technical oversight of the POC Program across all three sites and general oversight of POC activities
  • Assists in planning, organizing, and coordinating workflow and processes to ensure alignment with best practices.
  • Perform project management activities when introducing a new POCT device or middleware upgrade.
  • Ensures daily work is completed according to established departmental policies and procedures.
  • Monitors work, prioritizing workload and responds effectively to changing demands.
  • Assists Lab Manager and Lab Quality Manager in the development, implementation and ongoing review of the discipline specific Quality Management System ensuring compliance with IQMH accreditation requirements.
  • Participates in the development of quality indicators, monitoring trends and taking appropriate actions based on indicator performance.
  • Participates in quality and safety audits and assists in instituting corrective actions where required and monitors effectiveness.
  • Documents incidents, takes appropriate actions, follows up with staff and submits incident reports to the Laboratory Quality Coordinator
  • Establishes, maintains and monitors quality assurance and quality control for designated areas, participates in troubleshooting, investigates discordant external quality assurance results, resolves issues, implements corrective actions and monitors their effectiveness.
  • Oversees inventory levels to ensure adequate stock and supplies.
  • Develops, reviews and updates technical manuals in the document control system.
  • Works with various units in the hospital to ensure devices are properly maintained.
  • Oversees and initiates evaluation of new devices, methods and procedures and provides guidance in implementation.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Chemist and other Team Leaders in the development and implementation of POC policies and procedures.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvement, minimizes waste and improves efficiency.
  • Trains and teaches technical staff in designated areas.
  • Oversees student teaching program in the Department.
  • Assists in conducting regular staff meetings to share information, discuss issues and promote team building.
  • Assists in ensuring hospital and departmental policies and procedures are adhered to and assists in the development and review of Policies and Procedures with recommendations for changes and improvements as required.
  • Maintains and enforces established safety regulations and participates in the development of enhanced safety procedures as required.
  • Provides investigation, development, recommendation, implementation, and training associated with new methods and new technology.
  • Provides strong technical support, consultation, and interpretation in all aspects of POC testing.
  • Oversee new POC equipment requests and validation documentation.

Represents the department, and when appropriate, the organization on various internal and external committees.

  • Maintains current knowledge of professional standards, legislation, and requirements.
  • Support management in the development of operational and corporate budgets and provide statistics and analyses related to the department as required.
  • Recommend and assist in the planning of educational opportunities and the use of educational resources within the laboratory service across all three hospitals.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager.

Qualifications

  • Current general registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario required.
  • Recent clinical experience of 5 years in a department managing a POC program.
  • Experience with various POC devices and Aegis POC software required.
  • Must be capable of functioning well in a high stress environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in laboratory Quality Control theory, practice and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IQMH Quality Systems and Quality Assurance procedures
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize work, adapt to changing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and customer service skills, within and external to the laboratory setting.
  • Teaching/training experience required.
  • Must be able to work independently or in a team setting; demonstrate self-direction.
  • Proven ability to motivate staff and promote teamwork.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be capable of adapting to changing priorities, deadlines and procedures.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
  • Experience with the Meditech Expanse platform.
  • Continuing education relevant to the area of responsibilities as outlined.
