Senior Software Engineer, Frontend – Web Foundation
- Full-time
Job Description
WHAT YOU'LL DO
We are seeking a seasoned Senior Software Engineer who will play a tech lead role in the Web Foundation team. You'll have deep expertise in frontend and web architecture holistically, with strong depth in React, TypeScript, Next.js, and Node.js.
Web Foundation is the core architecture team for H&M's web channel. As H&M's strategy shifts toward personalization and modernization, architecture decisions matter more than ever. You'll partner with the Engineering Manager and the team to define what's next for our architecture, enable new capabilities, and build patterns that let teams move independently at scale. You'll have autonomy to lead technically while staying aligned on business and team strategy.
In this role, you will:
- Lead technical initiatives and strategy. Partner with the Engineering Manager and team to define technical priorities aligned with business needs (personalization, modernization, performance). Guide architectural decisions and technical challenges.
- Own technical direction and architecture decisions. Set direction on React/Next.js strategy, build system evolution, performance optimization, and design system patterns. Make decisions about middleware layers, component architecture, and performance trade-offs.
- Conduct rigorous code reviews and mentor through feedback. Review code carefully, provide feedback that helps engineers learn and improve. Set the bar for quality and help the team think architecturally.
- Explore and validate emerging technologies. Lead prototypes and proof-of-concepts (App Router, Suspense, RSCs, Server Components, new tooling). Evaluate and help the team adopt new approaches critically.
- Work hands-on with code. You prototype, debug, validate architectural ideas, and document decisions. You stay grounded in reality.
- Facilitate alignment across teams. Work with backend, platform, and security architects on middleware design, API contracts, and cross-team concerns. Communicate technical direction clearly and navigate trade-offs.
ABOUT THE TEAM
We're a team of senior engineers who solve complex problems together. We discuss architecture, technology, and design patterns—and listen to each other's perspectives. We build Web Foundation's internal tools and architecture, which means we're both enabling product teams and evolving how we work. We value diverse perspectives and backgrounds. What unites us is a shared commitment: solving problems for H&M's customers on hm.com.
Your team: 7-10 senior engineers and consultants.
WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH
- Engineering Manager – You partner on technical strategy, business alignment, and team direction.
- Senior engineers – You mentor them and shape their growth.
- Product and backend teams – You partner on requirements and architectural approaches.
- Platform team – They implement your architectural designs and own tooling.
- Engineers across H&M – You influence architectural direction across the organization.
Qualifications
WHO YOU ARE
Must-have:
- 8-10+ years as a Software Engineer, with proven experience leading teams and making architectural decisions.
- Experience leading initiatives and playing a tech lead role. You've stepped up, owned initiatives, and guided technical direction.
- Substantial experience building or refactoring large-scale web platforms (ecommerce, SaaS, fintech, or similar).
- Deep expertise in frontend and web architecture. You understand component composition, state management, performance optimization, bundler configuration (Webpack, Rollup, esbuild), and code splitting.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management. You explain technical concepts clearly to engineers, product, and leadership.
- Team collaboration. You work well across organizational boundaries and navigate cross-team dynamics.
- Willingness to explore and learn. You're curious about new technologies, evaluate them critically, and drive exploration through prototypes.
- Deep proficiency in React.js, Next.js, TypeScript, and Node.js. You've shipped production code in all four.
- Shipped code that optimizes for performance. You've debugged performance issues across the stack—bundle size, Core Web Vitals, network waterfalls, rendering.
- Led or influenced architectural decisions. You've written RFCs, design docs, or architectural decision records.
- Deep knowledge of how SEO, accessibility (a11y), and performance impact user experience.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern testing frameworks (Jest, React Testing Library).
Nice-to-have:
- Experience designing and shipping middleware layers. You understand API contracts, caching strategies, and error handling.
- Azure or similar cloud platform experience.
- Experience building AI-assisted tools or agents.
- Shipped security-sensitive code and understand backend authentication/authorization patterns.
Technical working style:
- You conduct code reviews and mentor through feedback. Your reviews set the bar for quality and help engineers learn.
- You diagnose before designing. You identify root causes before proposing solutions.
- You explain trade-offs clearly. You explain technical decisions to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
- You document decisions that matter. You write RFCs, design docs, and architectural decision records.
- You validate your ideas. You prototype and test assumptions before committing to decisions.
- You focus on performance. You understand optimization, help teams prioritize it, and drive improvements.
- You help with prioritization and unblocking. You support the team in making trade-off decisions and removing blockers.
- You share what you learn. You document explorations and help the team level up.
- You lead by example. You write code, follow the standards you set, and take accountability for outcomes.
- You communicate proactively. You document decisions and flag risks early.
- You balance shipping with sustainability. You know when to move fast and when to build right for long-term health.
And people who are:
- Curious. You get excited about architecture and solving hard problems. You want to understand how things work.
- Willing to go deep. You're not satisfied with surface-level answers. You investigate until you understand.
- Driven to learn and share. You love exploring new technologies and helping your team learn too.
- An excellent team player. You collaborate well with others, listen actively, and contribute to a positive team dynamic.
- Respectful and collaborative. You value diverse perspectives and backgrounds. You're united with your team around solving for H&M's customers.
