Senior Software Engineer – Web Foundation

  • Full-time

Job Description

WHAT YOU'LL DO

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer Frontend with deep expertise in React, TypeScript, Next.js, and Node.js to join the Web Foundation team.

A top-tier Senior Software Engineer with a strong architectural mindset who can design patterns and standards that let product teams move independently without chaos. You'll work closely with our Tech Lead and Engineering Manager—who own the overall architecture strategy—to drive architectural improvements and influence how our web channel evolves. Problem-solving and acceleration are at the heart of what we do.

In this role, you will:

  • Explore and validate emerging React/Next.js features. Build prototypes (App Router, Suspense, RSCs, streaming SSR, Server Components). Understand what these mean for TypeScript, performance, and developer experience. Guide product teams on adoption.
  • Work hands-on with code. You prototype, debug, validate your architectural ideas, and write decision records that help others understand trade-offs. You don't design from a distance.
  • Design frontend architecture and build systems. Make deliberate decisions on component composition, state management, code splitting, bundler configuration (Webpack, Rollup, esbuild). Evolve design systems and patterns that product teams depend on.
  • Own technical quality. Lead rigorous code reviews and architectural decisions. Maintain consistency and won't approve shortcuts, even under pressure.
  • Contribute to alignment across teams. Work with backend and platform architects on middleware layer design (Node.js), API contracts, efficient payloads, caching strategies, error handling, and cross-cutting concerns.
  • Improve developer experience. Identify and fix friction: slow builds, missing tooling, local development pain, deployment complexity.
  • Define and evolve platform standards and patterns (components, hooks, middleware, data-fetching strategies) that accelerate delivery without increasing technical debt.

WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH

The Web Foundation team is the backbone of H&M's web channel. We work horizontally, removing architectural friction and solving problems that block product teams.

You'll collaborate closely with:

  • Tech Lead and Engineering Manager – they own overall architecture strategy and direction; you work together on design decisions, technical roadmap, and standards evolution.
  • Product teams building features on our architecture – you partner with them to validate designs and unblock technical issues.
  • Frontend Platform team who implement your architectural designs and own the tooling and infrastructure.
  • Backend and security architects to align on middleware layer design (Node.js), API contracts, and cross-cutting concerns.
  • Engineers across H&M's global teams – you'll work across timezones on architecture decisions that affect the whole platform.

Qualifications

WHO YOU ARE

Must-have:

  • 8-10+ years as a Software Engineer, with substantial experience building or refactoring large-scale web platforms (ecommerce, SaaS, fintech, or similar).
  • Deep proficiency in React.js, Next.js, TypeScript, and Node.js. You've shipped production code in all four.
  • Expertise in frontend architecture and component design. You've made decisions like: CSR vs SSR vs hybrid, where to draw component boundaries, when to use context vs external state management.
  • Built or refactored tooling and build processes. You understand bundler configuration (Webpack, Rollup, or esbuild), code splitting, tree-shaking, and how to analyze bundle size.
  • Shipped code that optimizes for performance. You've debugged and fixed performance issues across the stack—bundle size, Core Web Vitals, network waterfalls, rendering performance.
  • Led or influenced architectural decisions. You've written RFCs, design docs, or architectural decision records that shaped how systems work.
  • Deep knowledge of how SEO, accessibility (a11y), and performance impact user experience and the entire platform. You don't treat these as afterthoughts.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern testing frameworks (Jest, React Testing Library, or similar).

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience designing and shipping BFF patterns and middleware layers. You understand API contracts, efficient payloads, caching strategies, and error handling between frontend and backend.
  • GCP or similar cloud platform experience.
  • Experience building AI-assisted tools or agents.
  • Shipped security-sensitive code and understand backend authentication/authorization patterns.

Technical working style:

  • You diagnose before designing. You identify root causes (slow builds, poor Core Web Vitals, API latency) before proposing solutions.
  • You explain trade-offs clearly. When you choose Server Components over client-side state, you can explain why to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders without jargon.
  • You write decision records and documentation that others actually use. Not wiki graveyards—docs that help the next engineer understand your trade-offs and constraints.
  • You prototype and validate your ideas. You don't design from a distance; you code to test assumptions and find edge cases.
  • You care about code quality and consistency. You own code reviews rigorously and won't approve shortcuts, even under pressure.
  • You lead by example. You step up on hard problems, unblock teams, and improve processes as you find gaps. You don't wait for permission.

Additional Information

WHY YOU'LL LOVE WORKING HERE

Benefits & Perks:

  • Staff discount on all H&M Group brands (in-store and online)
  • H&M Incentive Program (HIP) with competitive benefits
  • Collective Agreement and ITP pensions (Swedish market competitive)
  • 30 days' vacation, health care allowance, strong work-life balance
  • Benify partner discounts and other perks

The Role:

  • Drive architectural decisions and influence platform direction. You work closely with the Tech Lead and Engineering Manager on BFF strategy, component patterns, build tooling, and performance standards. Your technical perspective shapes how the team evolves the platform.
  • Solve problems at scale. You'll tackle: How do 200+ engineers ship independently without conflicts? How do we reduce Core Web Vitals for users in low-bandwidth regions? How do we onboard new product teams faster?
  • Real, measurable outcomes. Examples of success: Reduce core bundle size from 150KB to <100KB. Shift 80% of product teams to BFF pattern. Cut platform onboarding from 2 weeks to 2 days. Improve deploy frequency from 2x/week to 2x/day.
  • Technical mentorship and code review leadership. You'll review code rigorously, lead design discussions, and help senior engineers think architecturally about their work.
  • Learn at massive scale. 50M+ monthly users, 60+ markets, 200+ engineers. The scale problems you solve here won't exist at most smaller companies.
