Job Description

Canam Buildings US Inc. is seeking a Tax Accountant to join its finance team. This position will be responsible for the company’s various indirect tax filings including sales/use, local business licenses, and personal property tax.  The Tax Accountant will answer indirect tax-related questions, own the resolution of business customers’ issues, and work with the corporate tax team when necessary. This position will participate in the growth of the company and the implementation of the technology required to support the business.  

Essential Functions

  • Provide the source data for sales and use returns to service provider monthly, review returns for accuracy and completeness, and remit tax payments;
  • Reconcile sales and use tax accounts and prepare journal entries;
  • Maintain the tax calculation engine, including product code mapping;
  • Work with the Sales and Credit Departments to review and approve sales tax exemption documentation required to substantiate the customer's tax-exempt status during an audit;
  • Apply understanding of the relationship between customer exemption type, product taxability, and state and local tax laws to customer transactions;
  • Maintain tax exemption certificate database;
  • Analyze purchase invoices to determine applicable use tax and prepare monthly use tax accruals;
  • Receive requests for and prepare resale/exemption certificates for vendor invoices;
  • Work closely with other departments, external customers, and vendors to resolve sales and use tax inquiries;
  • Prepare gross receipts returns, property tax returns, business licenses and tax registrations;
  • Conduct technical research related to state and local sales and use tax laws, legislation, and current developments;
  • Respond to sales and use tax notices and correspond with tax agencies;
  • Identify and assist with establishing new tax business processes and recommend improvements to existing procedures; 
  • Perform ad-hoc projects and process improvement initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Accounting or Finance, or comparable experience;
  • 2+ years of sales and use tax experience;
  • MS Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and complex formulas;
  • Experience in construction industry preferred;
  • Experience with QuickBooks and outsourced tax provider would be an asset;
  • Bilingual English/French would be an asset.
