Job Description

The Automation Technologist installs, repairs and maintains the reliability of network infrastructures and operating systems on multiple platforms for the Canam PLCs, SCADA, and plant information local area and wide area networks (LAN/WAN) to facilitate the automated operation of Canam Group’s manufacturing plants. They assist and train Canam’s end users to make effective use of process automation systems and process information networks to effectively accomplish Canam’s goals.

Essential functions:

  • Install, configure, integrate and maintain process automation and process information networks; install, configure and support network devices including PLC’s, I/O networks, HMI’s.
  • Diagnose control and network hardware malfunctions; perform maintenance and repair; coordinate repair of equipment under warranty with users and outside service repair technicians; replace components and parts and change out equipment when necessary to ensure the timely and accurate completion of preventive maintenance activities.
  • Design, develop and write programs for new automation and enhancements to existing PLC’s, computers, configurations and applications to facilitate operational requirements of Canam Group’s manufacturing facilities.
  • Develop, evaluate, test, install, troubleshoot and modify central control operator interface graphics, ladder logic, control and communication databases, application programs and system support scripts.
  • Perform a variety of difficult and complex tasks in the diagnoses, calibration, installation and troubleshooting of PLCs, and related systems and facilities, utilizing sophisticated electronic test and measurement instrumentation.
  • Review, modify and report on Canam specifications and design documents for new and existing equipment as related to process control schemes, instrumentation and communication, checking for compliance with Canam and industry standards.
  • Perform and instruct others in the support, preventive maintenance and repair of control systems, electronic and computer systems, components, devices and equipment.
  • May act as a project leader, coordinating, overseeing and inspecting the work of technical staff.
  • Carry out other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned or required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in the development of process control, implementation of process automation, control and telemetry systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in electronics, electrical engineering, computer science, or closely related field. 
  • Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming; Human Machine Interface (HMI) software configuration; software, mechanical and electrical maintenance principles and practices; principles and procedures of record keeping; advanced mathematical principles.
  • Ability to analyze complex maintenance problems and recommend solutions.
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivation, and pride in delivering high quality results.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, including attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in team environments, as required.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Able and willing to work alternative schedules, and available to travel, if needed.

Additional Information

Physical Demands:
The ability to stand continuously is essential with frequent walking and occasional sitting. The nature of the position will require the employee to perform a wide range of physical activities ranging from bending/stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) to climbing, crouching, kneeling and handling. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.

Work Environment:
Working safely is a condition of employment at Canam. Constant exposure to a steel fabrication environment and exposure to weather conditions, excessive noise levels and vibrations. Often works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes and airborne particles. Occasionally works in high, precarious positions. Noise levels in the work environment will require the use of appropriate hearing protection. The correct usage of PPE will be required at all times.
