About the Opportunity 

This role is part of the School of Engineering and Built Environment technical team, supporting teaching, learning and research across the Gold Coast and Brisbane South campuses. Reporting to the Senior Technical Officer (Gold Coast), the position provides specialist technical support for teaching and approved research projects, including fabrication, testing, and laboratory operations. The role also contributes to the planning, maintenance and operation of teaching and research equipment, and delivers high‑level mechanical engineering and workshop support. While primarily based on the Gold Coast, occasional travel to Brisbane South and off‑campus fieldwork may be required. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Demonstrate safe and correct operation of specialist equipment, supporting academics and students.  

  • Provide hands‑on mechanical technical support for engineering research projects, including design, fabrication and testing of custom equipment and instrumentation.  

  • Support undergraduate laboratory classes through setup, operation, supervision and dismantling of experimental apparatus and materials; pre‑run experiments as required.  

  • Operate and support workshop equipment including laser cutters, 3D printers, lathes, mills, table saws and CNC routers.  

  • Assist with laboratory engagement and marketing activities, ensuring smooth operations and clear communication.  

  • Liaise with suppliers to source materials and equipment and maintain awareness of emerging technologies.  

  • Maintain laboratory readiness, documentation, space and equipment utilisation to support research and teaching timelines.  

  • Manage installation, maintenance and preventative servicing of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.  

  • Support laboratory systems, procedures and compliance with WHS requirements, including inductions, training and risk assessments. 

About you 

  • The occupant of this position will have completed a relevant degree without subsequent relevant work experience, or an associated diploma with at least two years’ subsequent relevant work experience; as a post-trade or advanced certificate with extensive relevant experience as a technician; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

Salary  

HEW 5 Salary – Base range FTE - $82,415.66 - $92,456.55 + 17% super. Full package range FTE - $96,426.31 - $108,174.16.
