Company Description

The Quantum and Advanced Technologies Talent Building Program (Program) aims to build the talent pipeline for the quantum and advanced technologies ecosystem in Queensland. The objectives of the program are to:

  • Contribute to and strengthen participation of students in quantum and advanced technologies for those who identify as women or non-binary, are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, or are from regional areas
  • Train a new generation of PhD students into excellent quantum researchers capable of being  pioneers in this emerging discipline
  • Build technology capability and skills across a range of fields
  • Improve translation and commercialisation skills
  • Foster collaboration across academia and industry

We are currently looking for a PhD candidate to undertake research within a Quantum and Advanced Technologies area.

Successful applicants will be based at either Gold Coast or Brisbane South (Nathan) as per agreement with their supervisory team.

Qualifications

To be successful, applicants will have the endorsement of a proposed supervisor to undertake a proposed research project in one of the following areas:

  • Quantum
  • Compound semi-conductors
  • Superconductors
  • Photonics
  • Micro-electromechanical systems.

The selection of applicants for the award of higher degree research scholarships at Griffith University involves consideration of your academic merit and research background.

  • Expressions of interest are welcome from domestic and international applicants.
  • Applicants will be enrolled in (consuming less than 12 months FTE at scholarship commencement date), or applying to commence a Doctoral degree at Griffith University
  • Applicants must hold a Bachelor Degree (AQF 8) with First Class Honours (Class I) or be regarded by Griffith University as having an equivalent level of attainment, as specified on the Equivalent qualifications for HDR program admission webpage.
  • Priority award will be given to competitive applicants who identify as women, or non-binary, or are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, or who identify as being from a regional, rural or remote background,  as per the Australian Standard Geographical Classification Remoteness Areas (ASGC Remoteness Areas)

International applicants should ensure that English Language Proficiency requirements for the program are met before formally applying. Applicants to research programs will need to show they meet:

  1. A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS (Academic) with no band score less than 6.0 OR
  2. A minimum score of 575 on the paper-based TOEFL including a score of no less than 5.0 on the TWE OR
  3. A score of 79 on the internet-based (iBT) TOEFL with no sub-score less than 19

Additional Information

About the scholarship
The total value of this scholarship package is approximately $49,752 pa, comprising a Quantum and Advanced Technologies Top Up scholarship, packaged with a Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship (GUPRS). Applicants who are already in receipt of a GUPRS or equivalent scholarship can apply for the top up only.

The Quantum and Advanced Technologies Talent Building Program Top-Up Scholarship has an annual stipend of $15,000 (fixed) for up to 3 years. An additional translation and development research allowance worth $5,000 per annum for a maximum of total of $15,000, and a travel allowance worth $5,000 may also be available.

The 2025 Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship has an annual stipend of 34,752 (indexed) for a period of up to three years of full-time study. Please see the GUPRS Conditions of Award for more information.

Currently enrolled candidates will be awarded scholarships for a reduced tenure.

A successful International applicant will also be awarded a Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship to cover tuition fees for up to three years. Please see the GUIPRS Conditions of Award for more information.

You are invited to develop a research project and seek appropriate supervision in one of the eligible research areas to develop custom project proposals which are tailored to a combination of the candidate’s strengths and faculty research interests.

The research conducted in the eligible areas is generally but not exclusively within the portfolio of the Queensland Quantum and Advanced Technologies Research Institute
