Job Description

The Principal Mechanical Engineer is a key role in our Engineering Services team. Working with our experienced multi-disciplinary team, you will lead the design, implementation and operation and maintenance of the University HVAC and specialist laboratory services infrastructure, collaborating with Facilities Management, Asset Management, Capital Works and Major Projects teams, the wider University community, contractors and consultants delivering maintenance and projects across all University locations from South Bank to the Gold Coast.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing design briefs, advising on projects, witnessing testing, defects inspections, managing contracts, overseeing maintenance strategies, ensuring compliance with Griffith University design guidelines, and maintaining safety standards.
  • Contributing to the strategic planning of the University to ensure the infrastructure meets current research and teaching needs and plan for future requirements.
  • Leading the mechanical engineering and BMS teams and as the subject matter expert, mentoring the mechanical engineering team.

About you
You will have:

  • A degree in mechanical engineering recognised in Australia with the ability to technically brief, design review, deliver and manage energy efficient and cost-effective mechanical services systems based on a total cost of ownership approach
  • RPEQ registration
  • Extensive experience and problem-solving ability in mechanical building services engineering, especially chilled water systems, air conditioning (with active humidity control) and laboratory systems, ideally both as a design engineer and either client-side or contractor experience
  • Familiarity with the relevant standards and codes of practice
  • Enthusiasm for improving the energy efficiency and sustainability of building services infrastructure
  • The ability to clearly communicate with a diverse range of people and organisations.

This is a continuing, full-time position and whilst it is based at the Griffith University Nathan campus, you will be required to work across other campus locations at Mt Gravatt, Gold Coast, Logan and South Bank Brisbane. Griffith University’s campuses are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.
