Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a largely impactful international project, The E-DENGUE project, which is funded by the UK Wellcome Trust Fund, led by the School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine. University of Queensland in collaboration with Griffith University, Yale University, Sunshine Coast University, ANU, and Vietnam Health authorities. The project will involve model development and validation, with heavy input from local stakeholders and community engagement. The research outputs will be used to develop a strategic program for dengue prevention and control by local health authorities in Vietnam.

Program Three of the E-Dengue in Vietnam Project is led by Professor Cordia Chu, Director of Griffith University’s Centre for Environmental and Population Health (CEPH), a leading centre of public and environmental health research and capacity building. CEPH researchers have recognised excellence in addressing the world’s most pressing public and environmental health issues, including those related to urban development, environmental change, workplace safety management, gender, leadership, risk communication, health promotion and chronic disease. The current CEPH’s focus is on linking climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction and promoting One Health approach for global health security. 

This research fellow will undertake independent and collaborative research within the focus areas of CEPH’s work in Program 4 Needs Assessment of the E-Dengue Project. Specifically, the appointee will provide specialist expertise in mixed methods approach that combine quantitative and qualitative analyses in the context of needs assessment, stakeholder communication and community engagement.

Key responsibilities include:

  • The research fellow would design and supervise the comprehensive needs assessment, develop context-specific communication plans, and assist in building multi-sector relationship as well as promoting use of research products and outcomes to the authorized agencies and relevant stakeholders.
  • Actively support the Director of CEPH and contribute to all aspects of the delivery of the CEPH’s Wellcome Trust Grant obligations, with an emphasis on disseminating research outcomes to communities and relevant stakeholders.
  • Produces quality research outputs with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets.
  • Lead or participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and other activities.
  • Contribute to the mentoring and supervision of the Higher Degree by Research student involved in the project and elsewhere in the CEPH (as appropriate).
  • Demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team, contributing to team management and a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.

This is a fixed term (3 years), full time position and will be primarily based at the Griffith University Nathan campus. As Griffith is a multi-campus University you may be required to work across other campus locations. Griffith University’s campuses are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.

Salary Range
The full time equivalent base salary for a Research Fellow (Grade 1) is in the range $82,359 - $96,473 per annum + 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $96,360 - $112,873 per annum.

You will also have:

  • Completion of a PhD in the discipline areas such as public health, infectious disease, epidemiology, community health, climate change and health,
  • Demonstrated competence with quantitative and qualitative mixed methods approach in research.
  • Proficient in both Vietnamese and English is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in community engagement with high level of communication skills.
  • Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.

  • Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding.
  • Have knowledge and experience in digital transformation and applying digital health solutions to strengthen disease surveillance systems.
  • Understanding of the public health information system and the national health information system in Vietnam.
  • Track record in policy advocacy and campaigning to influence decision-makers and the public.
  • Knowledge and experience integrating Gender Equity and Social Inclusion into project implementation.
